I and several family members in the U.S. are researching the genealogy of the surname Lightbourn and over forty variants, some of which are Lightburn(e), Leybourn(e), Leyburn, Laybourn(e), Layborn, Liburn, and even Lilburne. Our starting point has been The Lightbourne Family Tree 1025-1950 by James Horne Lightbourne which can be seen at the Library of Congress. There is also The House of Laybourn 1025-1938 by Captain Robert Laybourn, printed privately in Copenhagen in 1939, but available in some research libraries including the Library of Congress. The earlier variants of Lightbourn, de Leyburn and Leybourne, were to be found in many parts of England, from Kent to Westmorland. In the mid-1600's John Leybourne emigrated to Bermuda from Ireland or England, and a hundred or more years later some of his Lightbourn descendants moved to the Bahamas, Turks & Caicos Islands, Jamaica, and the United States. Other Lightbourns emigrated directly from England and Ireland to the U.S. | |
