The "Ligerakis & Markakis" Family Of Crete Greece

A cousin of mine was searching for his family. He was asking family members questions about the descendants of his father’s family. I found this very interesting and the desire to search for my father side descendant’s was planned on my heart. The next day I started the search by contacting “Ioannis or (John) K. Ligerakis” the oldest family member in the village “Nio Horio” Apokoronou Hania, Crete, Greece. He told me than his grandfather’s last name was originally “Markakis” but he was called by the given surname “Ligeraki” (which means good bodily figured man), as he was a handsome man and a good dancer. He also told me that he was from the village “Mprosniero” Apokoronou, a village close by.

A few minuets later, I was in that village of Mprosneiro. I talked to the Mayor and learned that he also was from the Markakis family. I introduced myself to him and explained the reason for my visit. He smiled and moved towards a bookshelf where he picked up a book and gave it to me. The book was titled: “The story of the Markakis family”, by Nikolaos Andrea Markakis.
He also called the author of the book and told him about my visit. The author asked to meet me for a further discussion. The following day, Ioannis Ligerakis and I went to Mr. Markakis’ house.

From the conversation between Ioannis Ligerakis and Mr. Markakis, and the information they exchanged became certain that the “Ioannis N. Ligerakis have changed his last name from Markakis to Ligerakis. From that day I started searching and keep record from the Ioannis N. Ligerakis (Markakis) till today 09-13-2008.
Fore a thanks, recognition and respect of “Nikolaos Andrea Markakis” fore his great work and effort, I published his work along with mine to display it as one great family of Markakis & Ligerakis. “Subject to revise”
