Notes for J
AMES LILLYWHITE:
"The last survivor of the team which he captained in the first two Tests ever against Australia, 1876/7, Jim Lillywhite came from a notable cricketing family.  His uncle was William, the 'Nonpareil.  Five of the family played for Sussex and in one match three generations - father, son and grandson - took part.  From 1862 until 1881 Jim appeared in every match played by the county.  A left-arm slowish bowler with a high and exceptionally acurate delivery, he was also a vigorous left-handed batsman and a good field, either at slip or mid-on.  Altogether, he visited Australia six [Ed. he actually made seven] times, the first being as a member of W.G. Grace’s 1873/4 side, and four being in business partnership with Alfred Shaw and Arthur Shrewsbury [Shaw and Shrewsbury were joint organisers of the England team, with Lillywhite, which made several tours], when he tended to have his fingers burned financially.  He also toured
America in 1868 and for some years was secretary of the United South of England Eleven.  He became an efficient umpire.

First-class career (1862-81): 1,140 wickets (15.38) Test matches (2): 16 runs (8.00), 8 wickets (15.75) and 1 catch.” (The Complete Who’s Who of Test Cricketers, Christopher Martin-Jenkins, Rigby
Publishers, Australia 1980, p85)

The Complete History of Cricket Tours at Home and Abroad (Peter Wynne-Thomas, Hamlyn Publishing Group Limited, London, 1989) states that James Lillywhite toured America and Canada in 1868; Australia in 1873-4; Australia and New Zealand in 1876-7; America, Australia and New Zealand in 1881-2; Australia and Egypt in 1884-5; Australia in 1886-7; Australia and New Zealand in 1887-8.  James Lillywhite was a team member in 1868 and 1873-4; arranged, managed and captained the team for the 1876-77 tour; organised (again with Shaw and Shrewsbury) and umpired in the 1881-2 tour; organised (again with Shaw and Shrewsbury) and umpired in the 1884-5 tour; organised (again with Shaw and Shrewsbury) and umpired in the 1886-7 tour; and organised (again with Shaw and Shrewsbury) the 1887-8 tour.

There is a photograph of James on page 20 of the above book as captain of the 1876-7 team, another on page 24 as umpire of the 1881-2 tour, another on page 26 as umpire of the 1884-5 tour and another on page 29 as umpire of the 1886-7 tour, another on page 32 as organiser of the 1887-8 tour.
