Descendants of William Tate

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM1 TATE was born Bet. 1735 - 1740 in North Carolina (?), and died 1820 in Franklin Co. Ga.. He married ELIZABETH WOOD (?).

Notes for W
ILLIAM TATE:
It is believed by Mrs. Updike that he was born in Virginia. Family legend is that
he lived so near the Battle at King's mountain that his son James ran away from]
home as a teen-ager and fought under his father, who was an officer during that
battle. The Roster of Soldiers from N.C. lists William Tate a trooper of thirty six
months service. On 2 Oct 1783, Col. Martin Armstrong (who himself married
Mary Tate) was to lay off 274 acres to William Tate, Trooper of N.C. line and
21 Oct 1783 Col.D. Gee to William Tate of N.C. line, however both warrants failed to state where the land was located. It is known that our William Tate lived in
North Carolina from 1765 through the revolution. The research for this has been
done by Mrs. Ethel Updike (now deceased) and recorded in her book, "Tate and
Allied Families of the South" Final distribution of his estate was paid to
J. Reed, Joseph Powers, Murdock McDuffee, Jessee McMillion, Legatee,
Elizabeth Tate, widow, David Reed, Patsey Tinsley, Van Davis, James Tate, David Tate, John Mors, John Miller.

In 1800, William Tate is shown on the census in Anson Co., N.C.
