Notes for J
OSEPHINE LINN:
Josephine's History as told by Fred Swenson (her grandson) at the age of 88 (he is now 96[8-00])
Josephine Linn was born Northwest of Stockholm Sweden on Feb 18, 1856 and died on April 13, 1937.
As a girl of 17, she came to visit her brother Ben Linn at Dunlap Kans and it was there, she and Grandpa met. and were married in 1873. They started farming up on Big John Creek but soon moved to Golden Colorado where Alfred was born.
She was a very industrious and caring person and especially enjoyed her family and friends.       Although she talked rather broken she always got her ideas across. I'll never forget the old 50 gallon flour barrel that stood in the corner of her kitchen and never do I remember that she didn't have sugar cookies or rye bread ready for all comers.
Their little house on Kahola Creek was always neat and clean, a joy for us grand kids to visit.
In her middle life she contracted consumption (tuberculosis to us now)She got so thin and sickly they were surely afraid they would lose her. Her sister in Sweden persuaded her to come back to a lady doctor who she thought could cure her. They took the four children and stayed 2 years. So I was told, the doctor put her in a special-tight room which was lined top-sides and bottom with some special cedar tree boughs and was confined there for three months. She later was released and apparently cured and lived to be 81 years old when she died.
While she hadn't had all the experiences grandpa had, she proved to be an equal mate and I've never seen two people better suited for each other. She lived in her home at 817 Main until a few months before her death. No one will ever know her great courage. A few months before her death, Uncle Alf and Aunt Jessie took her to their farm home on 4 mile South of Council Grove where they cared for her until she passed away.
No one but she and her family will ever know the joys-triumphs, sacrifices and of course sorrows-those older folks endured and the trials they went through and the love of raising a family amid all the difficulties of those pioneer times.

            WAS A PIONEER RESIDENT HERE
Mrs. C. J. Swenson came from Sweden to this County in 1872

Later lived 5 years in Sweden with her family but returned to America to make her home---Lessig to conduct funeral.

Death today claimed another of Morris county's pioneer residents, Mrs. Josephine Linn Swenson. Emigrating from Sholand, Sweden ,when 16 years old, Mrs. Swenson came directly to Council Grove in 1872. She had been preceded to Morris county by three brothers who homesteaded in 1869.
Several years after her marriage, the Swenson family returned to Sweden where the parents and four children lived for five years. Some of the older children attended school there. Drawn back to America by its greater opportunities and the fact that the family owned a farm here, Mrs. Swenson continued to live southeast of Council Grove. The family had first commenced farming what is now the county farm, but most of the time spent in Kansas was southeast of the county seat.
Mrs. Swenson was 81 years old and is survived by four children, Gus Swenson of Americus , Alfred and August J, Swenson of this city and Mrs. C. R. Wilson of Manhattan. John and Ray Linn are nephews and Mrs. Kathryn Gore of Dunlap is a niece.
The funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Durland-Block funeral home by Rev. Ray Lessig, pastor of the Christen church. Interment will be in Greenwood cemetery.
