A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE HOBBS FAMILY IN SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA
(Sent to me by Dorcas Hobbs in 1979. Author unknown. See first of article under Ezekial's father Vincent Hobbs, Sr.)

CRAIG HOBBS (1845 - 1934)

Craig Hobbs was born 14 December 1845 on his father's farm in Washington County, Virginia. The date of his marriage to Margaret Elizabeth kaylor is not yet discovered, but was probably about 1869 since their first child was born in 1870. Craig is reputed to have been one of the group of Hobbses who migrated to the Galena, Kansas area as a result of a family dispute following the Civil War. Upon his return he bought a Kaylor farm, perhaps from his father-in-law. This farm is said to have been 350-500 acres and was located in a gap in Pine Mountain in Washington County, Virginia, near the Scott County line. Craig was a self-sufficient farmer, raising all his food and a cash crop of corn. Following the sale of his corn, he made an annual trip by wagon to Bristol, where he bought a year's supply of staples such as salt and coffee.

The children of Craig and Elizabeth Kaylor Hobbs were William J., born 1870, died October 1932; james Washington, born 20 September 1871, died 1 April 1949; Sarah J., born 1875, married a necessary; Emory C., born 1877, who moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, and became a construction contractor; ida m., born 1879, who married Henry Dye; Minnie, born 1884, married George W. Dye, died 1936; Clarence (dates unknown), who married eight times; Ernest K., born 14 november 1889, died 13 March 1890; and twins born 8 march 1893. One twin died on the day it was born and was unnamed; the other was Vernon.

Margaret Elizabeth Kaylor Hobbs, who was called Betty, died 4 July 1904 and is buried in the Willow BVranch or Hobbs Cemetery, located on top of a hill across the road from the Hobbs house.

Craig Hobbs then hired a housekeeper named Nancy Strouth Morgan, a widow, since some of his children were small. They later were married; there were no children from this union.

Craig Hobbs died 15 September 1934 and is buried in the Willow Branch Cemetery beside his first wife. Following his death, his farm was sold several times. In 1978 it is owned and farmed by mr. Arthur Bayes, who resides in the same house in which Craig lived.

JAMES WASHINGTON HOBBS (1871-1949)

James Washington Hobbs was born on his father Craig's farm on 20 September 1871, second son of Craig and Betty Kaylor Hobbs. He was married about 1898/1899 to Zina Valerie Barker, the daughter of a neighboring family in Scott County, Virginia. They first established housekeeping in a log cabin on the Barker farm on Cove Creek Road. The house, which likely dates from early Barker settlement in the area, is still standing in 1978 but is being used as a barn or storage building. James Washington Hobbs was a miner for a time during his young years; he later became a carpenter for Martin Construction Company and he and his family moved to Pennsylvania Avenue, Bristol, Tennessee. At later dates he lived on Holston Valley Pike in the Bristol suburbs and was self-employed as a carpenter.

Children of James Washington and Zina Barker Hobbs were Virginia G., born 26 August 1900, died 4 September 1948; V. Mae, born 1902, presently residing at Virginia Avenue, Bristol, Tennessee; James Virgil, born 1909, married Vivian McClellan, living with his wife and son James McClellan Hobbs near Bristol; and Vernon Barker Hobbs, born 21 June 1915, married Margaret Eleanor Roberts. Venon and Eleanor Roberts Hobbs's children are Virginia Josephine, born 27 August 1943, married Byron Reece Harpold, now living in Annandale, Virginia; Eleanor May, born 14 June 1949, married Randolph Frazier, sons Allen and Michael, now living in Red Wing, Minnesota; and Vernon Craig, born 16 Feb 1960.

Zina Barker Hobbs died 7 November 1926 of tubercular meningitis; she is buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Bristol, Tennessee. James Washington Hobbs died 1 April 1949 and is buried beside his wife.
