Notes for Johann Nicolaus Gunkel:
Johann Nicolaus Gunkel was born on 3 October 1828 to Johann Adam Gunkel and Anna Margareth Hofmann. He was baptised 12 October 1828 in the Evangelical Church in OberRamstadt, Hessen, Germany.Usually the first name on German baptismal records is a christening name and the middle name is the given name but he was apparently sometimes called Johann and Nicolaus at other times.
Nicolaus came to America about 1832 with his parents. The family settled in Indiana and Nicolaus married Sena Reeves in Morgan County, Indiana on 27 January 1849.They were the parents of seven known children (including one child whose given name is unknown) and possibly one other.
A letter written by his granddaughter, Stella Softley, says the following about her grandfather: "I grew up thinking my grandfather Gunkel's name was Johann Gunkel instead of Nicolaus. He and Sena and children traveled by ox team from the wooded country of Indiana to Kansas, where they homesteaded in the unfenced territory 'till the grasshopper plague drove them to Missouri. Before I was old enough to remember, my parents (Harry & Vienna Softley) had moved onto the Gunkel place (in Emporia, Kansas) and we lived in their house but in different living quarters. My grandfather was not very strong and when I was almost 5 years old he became very ill and died.I remember him as a quiet, kindly middle-sized man with silvery hair and very blue eyes."
The family can be found on the following US censuses: 1850 Jefferson Twp, Morgan Co, Indiana; 1860 Emporia Twp, Lyon Co, Kansas; 1880 Index Twp, Cass Co, Missouri; 1900 & 1910 Lincoln Twp, Dallas Co, Missouri.Nicolaus was a farmer.
Nicolaus died in Urbana, Dallas Co, Missouri on 25 May 1910 of senile debility with chronic bronchitis. His death certificate shows that he was buried in the Howard Chapel church cemetery on 27 May 1910.
Stella Softley wrote about family burials: "Grandmother's grave, Grandfather's grave, my mother's grave, and Rosa and Daniel Gunkel's twin sons, dead at birth, are in Howard Chapel cemetery east of Urbana.Only my mother's grave has an inscription. The other three have unmarked stones."
Nicolaus' will recorded in Dallas Co., Missouri:
Dated 24 June 1904 - proved 15 September 1910
"I Johan Gunkle being of sound mind do publish this to be my Last Will and Testament.I want all my just debts paid as speedily as possible.
I desire my wife Sena Gunkle to have and to hold all the rights and title in my estate during her natural life then I want the proceeds of my personal property and real estate equally divided between my children.
I appoint Daniel Gunkle Executor of this my last Will and Testament.I desire that he don't give any bond."signed Johan Nicholas Gunkel
Notes for Sena Reeves: Sena Reeves was born 18 December 1825 in Ohio, daughter of Daniel Reeves and Nancy Lang. Her parents moved to Morgan Co, Indiana ca 1836.Sena married Johann Nicolaus Gunkel in Morgan Co, IN on 27 January 1849.They traveled by ox team to Breckenridge (Lyon) Co, Kansas before 1860 andthen to Cass Co, Missouri by 1880 and finally to Urbana, Dallas Co, Missouri around 1889. Sena's granddaughter, Stella Softley, wrote the following about Sena: "When I knew my grandmother, she had black eyes and white hair which must have been black when she was younger. She was tall and could not walk without crutches because she had broken a hip.She could be very sharp-spoken.I think she was a little older than her husband. She liked to tell her granddaughters about her former life. She was born in Ohio. She had one brother, Billy Reeves.(Her maiden name was Reeves.)She knew the medicinal value of certain herbs and plants, some of which grew in the garden on the place." Sena died 25 April 1912 in Urbana, Dallas Co, Missouri. The doctor wrote as cause of death: At time of my visit I found her suffering from a complication of troubles, among other things I found an (organic?) near __?__.Sena was buried in the Howard Chapel church cemetery on 26 April 1912. |
