Notes for Jesse Bowling:

Rev. Jesse Bowling:

Jesse Bowling / Boling was born 1 June 1758 in Wilkes County, North Carolina where he reached manhood in the midst of the Revolutionary War. He completed three tours of duty (three months each tour) during the Rev. War as follows:
1. Enlisted December 1780 in Wilkes County, North Carolina and served 3 months as a sergeant in Capt. William Hall's company commanded by Major Joseph Philips. He spent most of the three months at Salisbury, North Carolina guarding British and Torie prisoners.
2. He was drafted in the spring of 1781 and served three months as a sergeant in Captain John Cleveland's company which was attached to a battalion commanded by Major Benjamin (Henderson) in a regiment commanded by Col. Benjamin Cleveland. He guarded the county against invasion by the British at the trading ford on the Yadkin River, Wilkes Co, NC.
3. Enlisted for a three month tour in July or August 1781 in Grayson County, Virginia as a light horse soldier under Captain Stinson whose company was attached to the command of Col. Arthur Campbell, chief commander of the troops. They were to guard against the depredations of the Tories on the south line of Wilkes County, NC. They marched to the place where the Tories were reported to be but found the Tories had disappeared so they returned to Grayson County, VA. He supplied his own horse for the expedition.
Record of his service during the Revolutionary War is found in his Pension Application. Pension file #S14974.
About 1776 Jesse married (presumably in Wilkes Co, NC) Polly Green. They had one known son. Polly died before 1785 and Jesse married Mary Pennington on 6 January 1785 in Wilkes County, NC. They had 12 children - 6 sons and 6 daughters.
On the 1790 US Census Jesse can be found in Morgan District, Wilkes County, NC.
In 1802 he was presented to the Stony Creek Primitive Baptist Church at Fort Blackmore, Scott Co, VA and was later ordained an elder (became a minister) in the Blackwater Primitive Baptist Church in Hawkins County, TN.
Jesse came 'over the mountains' and purchased land at the Forks of the Powell River in Lee County, VA (where Big Stone Gap is now located in Wise Co, VA) in 1805 but by the 1810 US Census he and his family were residing in Clay County, KY. They lived on the North Fork of the Kentucky River, just above Grapevine Settlement, Clay County, Kentucky. This area became part of Perry County, KY when it was formed in 1821 and part of Breathitt County, KY when it was formed in 1839.
The family can be found on the 1820 Clay County, KY US census and Jesse and sons are on the 1822 tax list for the North Fork and Middle Fork of the Kentucky River in Perry County, KY. He moved to Quicksand, Perry Co, KY in 1838 and is listed on the 1840 Census of Pensioners as living in Breathitt Co, KY.

Notes for Francis Farley II:
Frances Farley Jr. was born in Henrico County (now Chesterfield Co) Virginia in 1726 and moved with his family to the Blackwater in Bedford County, Virginia around 1758. He married Nancy Blankenship about 1760 and they had ten children. He was a farmer, trader, noted frontiersman and border scout.
He served as a scout in the Virginia militia around 1774 when the settlers were having problems with the Shawnee Indians. He also served during the Revolutionary War and his name is found on the rolls of Captain Adam Clement's Company of the Virginia militia in 1781. This company marched to assist General Green in South Carolina. It is said that he carried the express mail between Washington's army and Jamestown during the Revolutionary War but I have yet to find documentation of this.
Sometime before the Revolutionary war, Francis moved to Culbertson Bottom and owned a 300 acre tract of land on Indian Creek in New River Settlement, Greenbrier Co (now Monroe Co) (W) Virginia. It is thought that in their later years his father and stepmother lived with him as they are supposedly buried on Francis's farm on Indian Creek.
In 1801 Francis moved to Simms Creek, Gallia Co, OH and on to White County, IL in 1815. He died in White County, IL in 1829 at the age of 103.
