Ancestors of Kay Frances Law

      354. Jacob Dillman, born Bef. 1730 in (Germany?); died Aft. 1787 in (Franklin Co, Virginia, USA?). He married 355. Eliza ? Bef. 1753.

      355. Eliza ?, born Bef. 1730; died Aft. 1786 in (Franklin Co, Virginia, USA?).

Notes for Jacob Dillman:
DILLMAN, as well as DILMANN and TILMANN, is a derivative of the German given name of DIETRICH. The man/mann ending was apparently just tacked on and has absolutely no significance.
It is family lore that Jacob Dillman's surname was originally Dagga. However, I have found no reference to the Dagga surname and am more inclined to believe that the Dillman surname originally was either Diehlmann or Thielmann and that it was Americanized to Dillman.
The first record I have found for Jacob Dillman is on the 1758 Tax Assessment List for Lebanon Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. By 1786 he is in Franklin County, Virginia as shown by a deed from Jacob Dillmon and Eliza, his wife, to Michael Peters, his son-in-law. Jacob and son Jacob are listed on the 1787 tax list for Franklin County, Virginia and living near Michael Peters.

Children of Jacob Dillman and Eliza ? are:
  i.   Magdalene 'Molly' Dillman, born Abt. 1753 in Lancaster, PA, USA; died Unknown; married Stephen Peters 1773; born 12 June 1748 (Source: Edward L. Peters, Some Descendants of Michael Peters, (1993), p2.); died 1835 (Source: Edward L. Peters, Some Descendants of Michael Peters, (1993), p2.).
ii.   Jacob Dillman II, born Abt. 1755 in Lancaster, PA, USA; died Aft. 1800; married Christina ? Bef. 1768; born Unknown; died Unknown.
177 iii.   Hannah Dillman, born Abt. 1757 in Lancaster, PA, USA; died Bef. 1819 in Franklin Co, VA, USA; married Michael Peters I Abt. 1777.

      360. (Anthony Barnheart), born Unknown; died 1808 in Frederick County, Maryland, USA (Source: Information provided by, Michael A. Barnhart via e-mail August 1998.).

Notes for (Anthony Barnheart):
Notes concerning the parentage of Daniel Barnhart ca 1759 - ca 1800:
For years it was supposed that Daniel Barnhart was a Jr. - being the son of Daniel Barnhart Sr. However, no trace of a Daniel Sr. has been found. Recently, family historians have suggested that our Daniel's father was Anthony Barnhart of Frederick County, Maryland. There were few Barnhart families in America during this time period and Anthony is not claimed by any other Barnhart line. Our Daniel died about 1800. Anthony died in 1808 and the heirs named in his will match the known siblings and children of our Daniel. Daniel's sons Daniel II and John purchased farms a few years after Anthony's death. It is thought that the money for these land purchases came from their inheritance from their grandfather Anthony Barnhart. Also, a memorial written about Daniel II says that he went to Maryland the year after his father's death to 'go to school.' This probably was an apprenticeship as it would have been quite customary for a young widow struggling to raise a family alone to put her sons into apprenticeships to ease the family burden. But why in Maryland unless there was family there? The proof of Daniel Barnhart's parentage may never be found but circumstantial evidence leads me to believe Anthony to be a good bet.

Children of (Anthony Barnheart) are:
180 i.   Daniel Barnhart, born Abt. 1755 in PA?, USA; died Abt. 1800 in Franklin Co, VA, USA - estate inventory 6 Sept 1800; married Elizabeth Naff 24 February 1788 in Franklin Co, VA, USA.

      362. Jacob Naeff I, born Abt. 16 March 1734/35; died 1806 in Franklin Co, Virginia, USA - bur Naff Cemetery. He married 363. Katherine Flory Abt. 1755 in (Heidleberg Twp, Lancaster Co, PA, USA?).

      363. Katherine Flory, born 1733 in Atlantic Ocean - bap 8 September 1733 Philadelphia, PA; died Abt. 1820 in Franklin Co, Virginia, USA - bur Naff Cemetery. She was the daughter of 726. Joseph Jacob Fleure and 727. Mary Conrad?.

Notes for Jacob Naeff I:
The NAFF surname is first found in Swiss records when Ulrich Neve was a witness to the sale of a house near the Cloister of Kappel am Albis in 1340. The Albis mountain range is in the present parish of Langnau, Canton Zurich. Like many Swiss surnames, Naff is of German origin and means 'nephew.' The European version of the Naff surname has umlauts (..) over the a and should be written as Naeff in English. There are many variations including Nafe, Nave, Neave & Neff.
Jacob is found on the tax lists for Heidelberg Twp, Lancaster Co, Pennsylvania from 1759-1770. He, Katherine and their children moved to Frederick Co, Maryland where they resided from 1771-1782. In 1782 they moved to Franklin Co, Virginia and settled on 314 acres located on Magotty/Maggodee Creek. Jacob received this property through a land grant from Governor Edmund Randolph - warrant #12,253 dated 11 June 1782. At the time, this property was located in Bedford County. Franklin County was created from Bedford County in 1785.
On 23 January 1791 Jacob purchased an additional 125 acres from Henry McDonald for the sum of 300 pounds and on 2 May 1791 he bought another 120 acres from Thomas Arthur for 200 pounds. These purchases brought his total land holdings to 559 acres.
Jacob's will is dated 20 March 1802 and was proved on 6 October 1806 in Franklin County, Virginia. He and Katherine are buried on a knoll on their farm in Franklin County. It is generally known as the Naff Cemetery and is the burial ground for four or more generations of their descendants.

p. 509-10: "Dr. George Stover was brought to America by his parents in 1754. After his first marriage, he settled at the Kinnikinick Creek in Franklin Co., Pa. He married second about 1793, Margaret Beaver, an aunt of Governor James A. Beaver and shortly after went to Virginia, settled on a farm near Amsterdam in Botetourt County; here he practiced medicine and became distinguished as a physician. The children of his second marriage were Susan, Anna, Rebecca, William, Sarah, Nancy, Joseph, Emanuel, Joel and an infant.
The following is taken from "Fretz's Stauffer History": "It is said that he (Dr. George) and his brother Emanuel inherited the west half of the old homestead in Franklin County, now owned by Wesley Koontz. Dr. George afterwards sold out his interest to Emanuel, taking payment therefor in Continental scrip, which, while on his way to Virginia, became worthless, and because he could not pay for the property he had purchased in Virginia, he was thrown into prison for debt. He however had other property, all of which he gave for his freedom. It is known that Dr. Stover made visits all through Virginia and North Carolina, professionally called to see severe cases of illness.
Eleven children, viz: John, Elizabeth, Jacob, Susan, Mary, Daniel, George, Catharine, Hannah, Abraham, Infant unnamed."

Cloyd, in which was the fork of the Great Road (See Deed Book 5, page 202); and in 1796 (Deed Book 5, p. 425) George Stover purchased from Michael Cloyd 4 1/2 acres of land "including part of Stover's Town, on both sides of the Great Road leading from Botetourt Court House to Roanoke River," in exchange for a like acreage conveyed to Cloyd by Stover. Stover's Town, laid off by G. Stover, is now known as Amsterdam.'
