The Ljungström / Youngstrom Family
The Ljungström / Youngstrom FamilyUpdated April 19, 2006
When I, Arne Ernst Ljungström (06 Apr 1930), first came to Canada from Sweden in June 1953, I started looking for my father’s two brothers and a half-brother who had emigrated to the U.S.A. in the early 1900s. The three of them, as well as my father Ernst Abel Stefanus Ljungström (03 Aug 1896 – 19 Mar 1974) and a sister, Rut Märta Maria Ljungström (19 Jun 1904 - 14 Jun 1985), were all born in Mönsterås, Kalmar län, Sweden. Their mother, Hilma Maria Sofia Karlsdotter, was born on 01 June 1863 and died 23 November 1904 in Mönsterås, Kalmar län, Sweden. From 26 January 1894 until her death she was married to Josef Alexander Ljungström, who was born on 24 November 1859 in St. Sigrid, Kalmar län, Sweden and died 27 March 1941 in Mönsterås, Kalmar län, Sweden. My initial searches were in vain and I forgot about it for many years. My interest was renewed when my brother-in-law, Per-Olof Granqvist in Sollentuna, Sweden, started some research into his own family background. Consequently, when I was in Sweden in July/August 2000 visiting my sister, Monica (Ljungström) Granqvist and her family, I visited the Swedish Archives and found some new and interesting information about our family. Subsequently, that year my brother-in-law came in contact with an American lady, Laurelle Pearson, who lives in Minneapolis, U.S.A. Her family had come to States in 1888 and she wanted to find out if there could be any relatives today in Sweden. After Per-Olof had been instrumental in finding a couple of relatives, Laurelle came to Sweden in 2001, visited her relatives as well as Monica and Per-Olof. Before leaving Sweden she promised to see if she could find information about Monica’s and my uncles. In November 2001 she came back with all kinds of information about our relations in the States. We now know that our three uncles, Karl Josef Valentin Ljungström (Joseph Youngstrom), Alex Sigfrid Efraim Ljungström (Alex Earl Youngstrom) and Bror Aldor Emanuel Ljungström (Jack Youngstrom), all died in the 1960s. However, seven of their twelve children, our cousins, are still alive as are dozens of their offsprings. At first my sister Monica and I contacted three of our cousins by telephone and letters and a few of their sons and daughters via e-mail. This led to more contacts and made me more determined than ever to continue my family research to see where it will lead us. In September 2002 my sister Monica, her husband Per-Olof and I will travel to Michigan, U.S.A. in order to meet as many of our newfound American relatives there as possible.
