Tangled Branches of the Tree

One of the questions that trouble me is: "Who are the parents of my great great grandmother, Sarah Chastain?" Following the leads of my cousins, Gwen and Van, some Coward historians, and others on the net, I placed her as the daughter of Abner Chastain (1764 - 1820) and Rachel Barnes (1770 -????). However, there is no proof. The Chastain Family Association, who have done extensive research on this family, does not have her listed.

The 1850 North Carolina census indicates Sarah's place of birth is Tennessee. That same census shows the person I think is her brother, Edward (who is a proven son of Abner and Rachel Chastain), living next door to her. Abner's other children, at least the ones we are sure of, were born in North Carolina or Georgia. Several Chastain families, including the Abner and Rachel mentioned above, were in Tennessee when she was born. I will continue to pursue this until I get the answer.

The parents of Jacob McCarty (1765 - 1841) are also in question. It is well proven that the person I show as Jacob's father, Daniel McCarty (1725 - 1791), was married to Sinah Ball (February 14, 1727/28 - 1798), but I can find no evidence that he was also married to the person shown as Jacob's mother, Agnes _______ . Even though many people on the Internet have accepted Agnes ______ as another wife of Daniel, I can find absolutely no confirmation. I even found one person who arbitrarily made Jacob the son of Daniel and Sinah McCarty, but that is totally bogus.

There is a weak link in the Washburn family that needs to be proven. It is said that there may be no connection between the Washburn’s of Wichenford, which have a royal connection, and the Washburn’s of Evesham. It really doesn't matter to me, but being a history buff, it's kind of fun to think that some of the medieval landed gentry could be related to our family.

There are other troublesome questions regarding a few birth and death dates and matching them to some early records. If you notice some slight (or major) discrepancies, please forgive me. If you have information to correct these mistakes, please feel free to forward it to me so we can have a more complete and correct history of our ancestors.

Purely in the interest of placing our ancestors in proper historic perspective, I have added a suffix to the names of men who served in the military during wartime. I didn't start doing that until late in my research and I may have missed a few. Please contact me if you see a designation missing. I used the following suffixes:

K.P.W.- - - - - -King Phillips War 1675-1676
F.I.- - - - - - - - The French and Indian War 1755-1763
R.W.- - - - - - - Revolutionary War 1775-1781
S.R.- - - - - - - -Shay's Rebellion 1786-1787
1812- - - - - - - War of 1812 1812-1814
G.A.R.- - - - - -Grand Army of the Republic (Union) 1861-1865
C.S.A.- - - - - -Confederate States Army 1861-1865
W.W. I- - - - - World War I 1917-1919
W.W. II- - - - -World War II 1941-1945

I could find no one who fought in the Mexican-American War (1847-1848), the Spanish-American War (1898-1890), Korea (1950-1953) or Vietnam (1963-1972). I'm sure there must have been some. Please contact me if you have information regarding veterans.

I have source information for most of my ancestors and will gladly share that information with family members. Just contact me by e-mail and let me know where you fit in the family and I will provide you with a gedcom or genealogy report containing all of my notes and sources.
