Descendants of John Locke

Generation No. 1

      1. John1 Locke was born Abt. 1726 in Virginia?, and died February 07, 1795 in Pr.Fred.Co, Va.. He married Nancy ??? in Virginia?.

Notes for John Locke:
Corporal in the Revolutionary War. Was drafted into service in February 1778. Re-enlisted and was in for duration of the war. Served in the 4th and 8th Virginia Regiment of Foot. Was at Valley Forge in February of 1778.
It is believed by this writer, that John and Nancy had several children, as was the normal sitiuation in those days. They had possibly a daughter Nancy Ann Locke, born in , who married William Brooks. William and Nancy Locke Brooks moved to Tazewell county, Virginia. It is also believed that they had a daughter Margaret Locke, who married Richard Riley and lived in what is now Jefferson county, West Virginia. Richard and Margaret had a son named Richard Locke Riley and a daughter Mary Grantham Riley. It is said that after Richard Riley sr. died, that Margaret married Walter Shirley of Charles Town, Virginia (now West Virginia).
The family tradition that has been passed down, is four brothers came from England to Virginia, and that one went north, one went south , one went west and one settled in Virginia.
The death date stated (February 7, 1795) for this John Locke is now in question. In a recently found, very old bible which originally belonged to Rev. James R. Locke, son of Thomas and Cynthia Hall Locke, it is stated that George and Sarah Hiatt Locke had two sons named John. The first son John was born July 26, 1776 and died February 7, 1795. The second son John was born March 29, 1795 and died March 7, 1877. It is possible that our Corporal John Locke also died on February 7, 1795 also. On the D.A.R. papers of Louise Harrison Whitaker, submitted to the D. A. R. in the 1930's she stated that Corporal John Locke died on February 7, 1795. This may or may not have been a mis-interpretation of other old family records. Probably from the prayer book of Capt. John Milton Locke, where he wrote "John Locke died February 7, 1795". This may have been assumed to be John Locke, the father of George Locke sr., or the possibility that both of these Johns died on the same day, and this was indeed truly also the death date for Corporal John Locke also.
