Descendants of John Locke


Generation No. 2


      2. John2 Locke (John1)1,2 was born 17462, and died April 25, 1831 in Jefferson, WV2. He married (1) Esther French2 17732. She was born February 13, 1749/503,4, and died September 26, 18014. He married (2) Rachel ??4 Aft. 18014. She died 18444.

John and Esther were buried on the Lock graveyard on the Flynn farm.

In researching the Locke family history when moving the graves of the Locke's, it was noted that John Locke, widower, had married Rachel after the death of his first wife, Esther and that he was the father of fourteen children.

From the Virginia Free Press and Farmers Repository, April 28th, 1831:
Died,
On Saturday last after a lingering illness, Mr. John Lock senior, in the 85th year of his age, one of the oldest and most respectable citizens of the County."

William and Elizabeth had no known children. According to the Order of the will partioning the estate of his father John Lock, deceased, William died prior to his father and his widow, Elizaeth received his share. She was in Jackson County, Tennessee in the 1850's as shown by deeds executed by her.

Nancy and Harrison had no known children. She and her husband relocated to Montgomery County, Missouri, acccording to deeds executed by them in the 1840's and 1850's. Nothing further is known about either of the Gorden's.

George W died unmarried according to the petition filed in the suit or partition of Rachel Lock's dower. It is assumed that he was buried in the same graveyard as his parents and siblings.

  11 v.   Martha Locke4. She married ?? Gray4.

Martha and her husband were in Boone County, Missouri in 1870 when a deed was executed. No known children.

+ 12 vi.   Eleanor Locke, died 1850.
  13 vii.   Elijah Locke4, died 1839 in St. Louis, Missouri4.

Elijah died unmarried and by a will dated 9-7-1837, left all of his estate to his brother Elisha except for some monetary considerations for his mother Rachel, and two of his sisters, Martha Gray and Nancy Goren.

J Randolph never married.

  17 xi.   Rebecca Ann Locke4, born December 20, 18314; died March 11, 19114. She married Thomas Williams4.

Rebecca and her husband went to Montgomery County, Missouri in the 1840's and 1850's and in 1857 were in Warren County, Missouri, according to deeds executed by them in the matter of her father and mother's estate. They had one child, a son who died in infancy.


      3. George2 Locke, Sr. (John1) was born April 25, 1747 in Frederick county, Virginia (now Clark county), and died September 28, 1823 in Frederick county, Virginia (now Clark county). He married Sarah Hiatt Abt. 1772 in Fred.Co., Va. ?, daughter of John Hiatt and Margaret Edwards. She was born October 09, 1753 in Hampshire Co., Va., and died July 27, 1827 in Frederick county, Virginia (now Clark county).

Notes for George Locke, Sr.:
Provided wheat and grain for the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War. He is buried with his wife Sarah Hiatt Locke on the Old Locke farm, near Wadesville, Virginia.

The Will of George Locke Senr. filed in Will Book 11, page 499 dated Sept. 22, 1823,
Frederick County Clerk’s Office, Winchester, Virginia

In the name of the Lord I George Lock Senior of the County of Frederick and state of
Virginia Being of a sound mind hath made this my last will and Testament as Viz. It is my
desire in the first place that all my Just debts shall be paid off as soon as convenient. It is
my last desire that my dear wife Sally Lock shall whole all my estate both real and
personal as long as she may live and after her death I doth bequeath the house and fifteen
acres of claired land where she may choose round the house and fifteen acres of woodland
at the end of the lane to my dear daughter Elizabeth Thacker during her lifetime and after
her death to her three children Martha Britton, Sally Ann Thacker and Elizabeth Thacker
to them and their heirs forever. It is my request that the tract of land shall be equally
divided between my three sons William Locke, George Lock and John Lock my son
William Locke and George Lauck holding their dwelling houses, also my son John Lock is
to have his wood land joining him and adjoining Reeds land a small tract of Pine land over
Opequon to be equally divided between my sons William, George and John, also my
daughter Mary Hiett three hundred dollars Sally Hiett my daughter three hundred dollars
also to my son Bengamines children three hundred dollars to be divided between them my
son William is to pay his sister Mary Hiett three hundred dollars my son George is to pay
his sister Sally Hiett three hundred dollars my son John is to pay his brother Bengamines
children three (word omitted) dollars. The tract of land I own in Mongahlania County
State of Virginia I bequeath unto my two sons Neal and Thomas Lock to be equally
divided between them and their heirs forever all my personal property is to be sold after
my wifes death and is to be equally divided between my sons. My last request is that
Robert Montgomery, My Son John Lock is to be my executors to my last will and
Testament. Thereunto I set my hand and Seal this 22nd day of September in the year of
our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty three.

At a court held for Frederick County the 6th day of October, 1823, this last will and
Testament of George Lock Senior decd. was proved by the oath of Rueben Jordan and
Joseph Likens witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded on the motion of Robert
Montgomery one of the executors therein named who made oath according to law
certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due form on his giving bond
with security where uupon he together with Joseph Parrell his security entered in and
acknowledged bond in the penalty of six hundred dollars conditioned for his due and
faithful administration of the said decedants estate and at a Court held for the county
aforesaid the 3rd day of November in the year aforesaid on the motion of John Lock the
other executor therein named who made oath according to law certificate is granted him
for obtaining a probate thereof in due form on his giving bond with security whereupon he
together with Richard Ridgway his security entered in and acknowledged bond in the
penalty of six hundred dollars conditioned for his due and faithful administration of the
said decedants estate. By the Court, Ja. Keith C.F.C.”

  Notes for Bety Locke:
There is some doubt as to if this Bety actually existed. She was listed as being born February of 1787 ( in Capt. John Milton Locke's prayer book), so she could possibly have been a twin sister (that may have died young or at birth) to Neal Locke who was born February 16, 1787. But in the bible of Rev. James R. Locke, son of Thomas, she is not listed.
