Notes for Drusilla Jane Britton:
MOTHER IS NINETY-ONE!
By Col.Walter Scott Vail
This day by us will remembered be, as our daily rounds we run,
for time has marked another year and Mother is ninety-one.
She has lived nine-tenths of a hundred years as the circling season runs
and has seen their flight as time goes by, for Mother is ninety-one.
Now she is feeble and bent and gray, and looks toward the setting sun
and totters around in a feeble way…for Mother is ninety-one.

She talks much now of the days that are past, days when she was young,
and seems to live in the long gone past, for Mother is ninety-one.
She talks now of the friends that are gone---who have left her here alone
and she seems to think they are near her yet, for Mother is ninety-one.
Her children too, who have gone before and left her with life undone;
She talks to them now and to her they are here…for Mother is ninety-one.

And often now as a carefree child she plays 'neath a Virginia sun
and prattles on in a childlike way, but now she is ninety-one!
She sees the mill that her father ran, grinding the golden grain,
and flowers still bloom by the path,--- caressed by the warm spring rain.
She basks in the love of her parents, yet long over the river they've gone
and seems to think they watch o'er her yet…although she is ninety-one.

Wondrous the changes that she has seen, and inventions swift have come.
She talks of the way they used to do, when work by hand was done;
when as a girl she worked and played clothed in their oun homespun
and says she would gladly wear them now…but she is ninety-one.

She tells when they left their birthplace home and moved toward the setting sun.
Of the mountains they climbed and rivers crossed---we wonder---she is ninety-one!
The four-horse team with it's wagon odd that rolled towards Ohio's plane,
'twas their only mode of travel then, never heard of a Pullman train!
They didn't have any cooking stoves but food o're an open fire was done.
It seems so strange and yet it is true…for mother is ninety-one.

She lives over the days as women grown, when her childhood days were done
and communes with the man that came into her life and forgets she is ninety-one!
She sees him now with his strong, clear mind, --- his lifework well begun.
They traveled together for fifty years ere his span of life was done.
She sees him bend with the weight of years, ere his resting place was won;
She thinks it strange he has been gone so long…and her but ninety-one.

The stream of time flows ever the same and the seasons surely come;
and changes come o'er the lives of all …ee'n though they be ninety-one.
A matter it is of a little time when the end of our lives will come,
and few there be who are with us here that will ever see ninety-one.
But mother sees things that are queer-in shadow, also in sun.
Then let her live in the past and have ever the best…for Mother is 91!
