Notes for Howard James Lock:
[Lockem~1.FTW]

Howard Lock was the oldest in his family and one that the others all looked up to. During WW II, he served in the U.S. Army, as an administrative and technical clerk with an ordinance unit serving an Air Force Unit in the Pacific Theater. Howard was awarded various medals for his bravery. One medal was awarded for his actions during a skirmish that took place in China. This event was depicted in a movie called "Mountain Road".

After the war Howard worked as an engineer for Chrysler Corporation. He worked there for many years. After he and Gloria were married, they moved to Redford Township, a suburb of Detroit. In late 1962, the family moved to Farmington Hills, Michigan. Howard tried unsuccessful to set-up a private Tool and Die company and later was involved in insurance sales. Howard was involved in a car accident on December 23, 1964 and died the next morning.

One of the obit's wrote:
Howard James Lock, of Farmington, who served in the South Pacific, died after his car struck a light pole on Grand River, just west of Lahser Road. Lock 41, lived at 28071Ridgebrook. He is survived by his wife, Gloria and their three children. The accident took place at 2:55 A.M. on Thursday, December 24. He was rushed to Redford General Hospital, where he died 12 hours later of internal injuries. The funeral was held at St. Fabian's Church in Farmington. Arrangements were handled by VanValkenburg Funeral Home. Lock was employed as a plant engineer at the Chrysler Corporation. He was discharged from the Army in 1946, a a tech sergeant. Among his citations were the Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, two Bronze Stars and four Overseas Service Bars and a Good Conduct Medal. He faught in the China (Defensive) and Air Offensive Japan Campaigns.

Howard will be remembered for his courage, his charm and his great sense of humor. Glorianna maintained the house in Farmington until her children were out of college. She then moved to Lachine, Michigan. When her daughter Denise moved to Alpena, she moved in with her. She also went with Denise when she got a job in Traverse City, Michigan. Glorianna was living with Denise and the two youngest boys when Denise died in 1998.

In an article written in the Detroit News sometime in 1961, columnist Jane Schermerhorn wrote:

DETROITER'S ROLE IN WAR IS FILMED

Men more readily write a book about their war experiences than talk about them. "Why" we asked World War II veteran Howard Lock the other day. "Who's really interested?" countered Lock, "Beside's, war's real heroes are the dead ones". Just the same there's a bit of "war" excitement at the Lock home on Wakenden Avenue these days.

Her Husband's Story

Thumbing through the magazine, she read that a move had been made about the demolition of an air base in Liuchow, China in those dark days of autumn, 1944. The movie "Mountain Road" was based on a novel written by Theodore H White. She remembered her husband had mentioned an air base in Liuchow and she showed him the magazine that night when he came home from work (he's a production engineer with Chrysler Corporation.)

Lock started to read. The film stars a favorite of his, Jimmy Stewart ("He's done so much good for the Air Force and has served his country selflessly") and the more he read, the more "Mountain Road" (1960) seemed to be the story of his outstanding war experience. (Note: another article noted that "The movie "Mountain Road (1960) based on a novel by Theodore White, dramatizes the exploits of Lock's demolition squad").

Blow Up A Base

The veteran's thoughts went back to early November, 1944, when he and six or seven other men formed the demolition team of the 491st Bomb Group. The group was assigned to destroy the air base at Liuchow. Our bombers had moved out, the fighter planes were leaving, the Japs were imminent. They dug holes for bombs, filled jeeps with supplies they must take with them, set the electrical mechanism which would detonate the ammunition, got into their jeeps and took off. All of this in the course of three days.

"I commend you for the part you took in the demolition of Liuchow Air Base from November 5, 1944 to November 8, 1944. It was a result of your efforts that the Japanese found only ruins when they reached the base..." begins the Chennault citation. Lock was singled out for his outstanding initiation in acts performed without instruction,. He was too modest to let read that part of the citation.

Family To be Theater Guests

Mr and Mrs Lock and their children - Jim, 11 Dave 10 and Denise 12 - will be honored guests at a performance of "Mountain Road" when it comes to the Palms Theater May 28. When Gen. James Stewart arrives in Detroit tomorrow to spend a few hours, it is highly possible he will find time to exchange a few words with the erstwhile sergeant of the Liuchow Air Base Action. Stewart plays the part of Maj. Baldwin in the film, leader of the group that left unpleasant news for the Japs. The thing that amazes Howard Lock is that a movie should be made of an incident way over in China - one unmentioned in the big news stories, one he never dreamed anyone but he and his fellow soldiers could be interested in.

NOTE - A couple of days later Jimmy Stewart met with Howard Lock and their picture together appeared in the Detroit News.

In a letter written to his parents on 12-4-1945, about one year after the episode in China in 1944, Howard wrote:

Dear Folks,
Surely hope this note doesn't find you ready to tear me apart. Had what I considered a very good reason for not writing. I can now name the ship and date I sail as the orders came in this afternoon. Will sail the 7th of this month on the USS General Brooke. I am scheduled to go to Fort Sheridan. I figure sometime around the middle of January Detroit will be honored with my presence. I'm on C.Q tonight and it sure is noticeable how nervous the boys are. Not a complaint or trouble in the world. An advanced party left early this afternoon and I expect to leave this area sometime tomorrow into Calcutta. Oh yes, had a pass into Calcutta Saturday. But will wait til see you to tell you how these guys lived over here.
Will sign off as Del is next. Keep that telephone clear and get a few drinks placed around the house.

All My Love,
Howard
