Generation No. 1

1. CORNELIUS1 MAHAFFEY was born 1804 in Donegal County, Ireland, and died December 1865 in Jackson County, Ohio. He married ROSANNAH GALLAGHER in Ireland. She was born July 01, 1805 in Bengaul, Alaire County, Ireland, and died October 21, 1895 in Coal Run, Jackson County, Ohio.

Notes for C
ORNELIUS MAHAFFEY:
Cornelius Mahaffey was living in 1840 Allegheny Twp., Huntingdon Co., PA.

Land records of Vinton County and Gallia County, Ohio show that Cornelius and his wife Rosannah purchased land in Wilkesville about 1843 and sold the same parcel of land in 1859. In the purchase deed "Conal" Mahaffey is reported to have been of "Allegheny County, Pennsylvania". This appears to be a misrepresentation of Allegheny Township, Huntingdon County, PA. Here we find a C. Mahaffy (different spelling) in the PA 1840 federal census that has a household enumeration that nearly identically matches that of Cornelius Mahaffey in the 1850 federal census for Vinton County, Ohio.

The 1850 and 1851 Census for the town of Wilkesville in Vinton County, Ohio, shows Cornelius and Rosanna listed with their children (name spelled Mahaffy). At that time, Cornelius was said to have been a farmer. It also shows that he was born in 1804. Some time after that he and his family moved to Milton Township (near Richmond, Ohio). He sold the 111 acres of property in Vinton County to William Ludy of Armstrong County, PA in October 1859. In the 1860 census for Milton Township, Cornelius also listed a Levi Dasher (born 1837) as living with him and Rosannah. This census shows Cornelius as being born in 1799 and that Mary and Patrick were no longer living at home.

Cornelius had a will made up in Jackson County, Ohio on August 27, 1865. That will was probated in the Jackson County Court on December 23, 1865. That means he died in Jackson county sometime during that time period. His will left 82 acres of land to his wife and his boys, Thomas and Jerome. If the two boys are deceased then the property would go to his son John.

Family records indicate that both Cornelius Mahaffey and Rosannah Gallagher were buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in the town of Wilkesville, Vinton County, Hawks, Ohio. However, records for that cemetery fail to corroborate this.

Notes for R
OSANNAH GALLAGHER:
In the 1870 census for Milton Township, Jackson County, Ohio, Rosanna is found living with her children. She is head of household in that census. In the 1880 census for Milton Township, Rosanna is found living with her sons Thomas and Jerome and her daughter Elizabeth.

In a book held by the Jackson County probate court, Rosanna is said to have died 10-21-1895. In the 10-30-1895, Jackson Standard Journal, it mentions that (Rosa Mahaffey) of Jordan aged about ninety years died last week.

  v.   CHARLES MAHAFFEY, b. 1841, Pennsylvania; d. Bef. 1908.
  Notes for CHARLES MAHAFFEY:
Charles was still living with his parents in Milton Township, near Richmond, Ohio in 1860. Charles must have died before 9-6-1908 because his brother Thomas's obit mentions that he was survived only by his brother Jerome and his sister Elizabeth. He is also not mentioned in his fathers will of 1865.

There is a Charles Mahaffy (different spelling) that enlisted as a private into the Civil War on 8-22-1862 in Ohio at the age of 22. (It is uncertain if this is the son of Cornelius Mahaffey). The Company was F Company, 114th Regiment Inf Reg, Ohio. This Charles died 7-26-1863.

  vi.   THOMAS J MAHAFFEY, b. August 1846, Pennsylvania; d. September 06, 1908, Milton Township, Jackson County, Ohio1.
  Notes for THOMAS J MAHAFFEY:
Thomas and his brother were among the first students who received the sacrament of confirmation at St. Mary's. He and Jerome were confirmed on 5-11-1869 by Bishop Rosecrans. In the 1880 census, Thomas was living with his mother and his brother Jerome and his sister Elizabeth in Milton Township, Jackson County Ohio. In 1900 census data, Thomas was still living in Milton Township, Jackson county, Ohio with his brother Jerome Mahaffey, his sister Elizabeth and her husband and their son Frank. A Thomas J Mahaffey died in Jackson County, Milton Township on 9-6-1908 at the age of 65. He was listed as a farmer and died of heart trouble. It does not appear that Thomas ever married or had any children.

An 1895 Jordan article in a local paper states: Thomas Bowen and Thomas Mahaffey contemplate organizing a singing class and dancing school in the near future.

An obit was printed in the 9-11-1908 Standard-Journal.
Mr. Thomas Mahaffy aged 61 years, was found dead in bed at his home near Superior last Sunday Morning. Coroner Ray was notified and an examination was held. His death was probably due to heart failure. He is survived by one brother Jerome and one sister Elizabeth, all of whom have lived together for many years. The funeral was held at Minerton Tuesday morning.
