From the memoirs of Andrew Taylor, brother of Margaret Taylor:
"My youngest sister Margaret was married about 1843 to a George Telfer of Jedburgh, a cabinetmaker, and was considered a good expert at his business but was apt at times to be led away by social companions into dissipation, which sometimes caused an unpleasant feeling in the family". Also from a description of a trip he made in 1874 " After being a day or two in the city I took a run out to Kelso and Jedburgh to see the friends, but there were some I could not see, as both my sisters, Agnes Huggand and Margaret Telfer were dead. I also went to Burnfoot and saw brother Alexander and his family".

Scottish Ancestral File Records:
Indicate that that Andrew and George Telfer emigrated to the United States and settled in New York. It was determined that their brother Robert Telfer also migrated to New York by comparing the dates of birth in the Scottish records with vital records in the US and city directories. Robert Telfer's death certificate indicates his birth as 9-10-1846 which is consistent with the Scottish records (except the Scottish records show the birth year as 1844).

This was confirmed by a Sparkill, NY 1892 city directory, which lists a George Telfer as 38 years old (indicating a birth year of 1854). Robert Telfer was one of the witnesses for the will of Margaret Young, the first wife of George Telfer (George later moved to Sparkill). The will was dated 8-9-1890. In addition, a George Telfer, living at 259 N 20th Street, witnessed Robert Telfer's naturalization on 10-4-1880.

Since it is evident that George and Robert interacted with each other in New York City, that they both claim to be from Jedburgh, Scotland, since their ages and birth dates match up with the Scottish records, and since in keeping with Scottish tradition both Robert and George named their first son's George (Scottish tradition is that a man's first son is named after the man's father), then it was concluded that the 1851 Scottish records are of this Telfer family.

It should be noted however, that the death certificate for Robert names his parents as Henry Telfer and Violet Stevenson. This information was provided by Robert's son Alexander. It is believed that the Henry referred to on that certificate may have been a reference to Robert and George's brother. Violet might have been a reference to his grand-mother.

From research in Scotland:
Q: Is it still possible to get George and Margaret's family histories by first finding their 6-3-1842 marriage certificate and seeing their parents names.
A: This is not an option, as they never recorded the details of parents on marriage records prior to 1855.

Q: Is it also possible to get the 12-15-1872 obit for Margaret (Taylor Telfer?
A: There wouldn't be an obituary notice for Margaret, as this was not a common practice in Scotland at this time, owing to the cost.

Q: If they left in 1872, are there emigration records/passenger lists from Scotland that would record the move.
A: Records are available, but they are held in England and need to be searched by individuals. The departure records prior to 1890 did not survive, so it is an impossible task.
