Descendants of John Locke

Generation No. 2

2. GEORGE W2 LOCKE (JOHN1) was born April 25, 1747 in Frederick County, Virginia ?, and died September 28, 1823 in Frederick County (now Clark County), Virginia. He married SARAH HIATT Abt. 1772 in Frederick County, Virginia, daughter of JOHN HIATT and MARGARET STEVENS. She was born October 09, 1753 in Hampshire County, Virginia, and died July 07, 1827 in Wadesville, Frederick County (now Clark County), Virginia.

Notes for G
EORGE W LOCKE:
Geoge and his wife Sarah were buried on the "Old Locke Farm", about one mile east of Wadesville, in what is now Clarke County, Virginia. They bought this land of 200 acres at a public auction in 1798 . This farm has the Opequon Creek as one of its boundaries. The old farm more than likely was partly in what is now Berkely County and Jefferson County, West Virginia. It was passed on to his son George, who eventually sold it to settle a debt. They lived here during the Revolutionary War. He served his country by furnishing wheat for the use of the army. In 1814, he purchased 163 acres on Litlers Run in the same county.

George provided wheat and grain for the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War. He is buried with his wife Sarah Hiatt Locke on the Old Locke farm, near Wadesville, Virginia.

Records of the first 10 children were taken from the Bible of William Brooks. It was printed in 1756. Written in ink on that Bible were the lists of the children. Information regarding Margaret and James were taken from the records of Ray Sheffield, Ashland, Kentucky. Records differ on the year of death, either 1846 or 1844.

Notes for W
ILIAM BROOKS:
The following information was taken from LDS Ancestral File 14, Dec 1993; from the Lineage of Charles Fairfax Brooks; from the Family Bible of William Brooks (1752-1841); from VA land records and from pension records.

William fought in the Revolutionary War. His pension application is on file at the National Archives in Washington DC (R1259, VA; Microfilm Series M-804, Roll No. 355). It shows he enlisted in the service in October 1788 at which time he was a citizen of Culpeper County (he moved there in November 1779). He was drafted again in February 1781, at which time he was a resident of Botetouri County, Virginia. He applied for a pension on 9-25-1832 at which time he lived in Tazwell County. At that time, he was 81 years of age.

In August 1843, Nancy applied for a pension; she was 94 years old at the time.

From the "Annals of Tazewell County, VA" pg 246 (1841)
"It appearing to the satisfaction of the Court, that William Brooks, deceased, was a evolutionary pensioner, that he departed this life on the 24th of January, 1841, leaving his widow, Anna Brooks, and the following being all his heirs and legal representatives, to-wit, John Brooks, William Brooks, Margaret Kirk, Elizabeth Stephenson, Nancy Clayburn, Sally Todd, Polly Brooks and Louise Asberry, it is ordered that the same be certified."
