Notes for J
ONAH BRITTON LOCKE:
Jonah was a carpenter. He and Sarah lived in Pleasant Township, Clark county. Jonah's sister Isabell lived with them. They moved to Pleasant Township, Clark County, Ohio and can be found living there in the 1850 census. Jonah and Sarah then moved to Minnesota in 1855, after losing five children in Ohio to some sort of sickness. They settled at Silver Creek in Wright County. Sarah's parents Jospeh and Rachel Brooks and children, came in the same wagon train, as they were listed in the 1860 census, as living in Clearwater, Minnesota (about seven miles from Silver Creek).

From the book by Everett Locke:
Our ancestor, Jonah Britton Locke, was a pioneer to the Minnesota territory. He was among the early settlers of Wright County, Minnesota in 1855. Jonah was a man that made things happened, just as his ancestors before him in Virginia, who served for the cause of the American Revolution. Life was not easy for Jonah and Sarah, they had faced tragedy and trial of the severest kind, having lost five children to illness in Ohio, but they were not afraid to search out new horizons, in spite of the hardships that existed. I dedicate this book to Jonah and Sarah, and their pioneer spirit.

There is a story that has been passed down about Jonah and Sarah Jane, when they lived in the Silver Creek area. It seems that there was a small back of 7 or 8 Indians, that would stop at Jonah's cabin every so often, and Sarah Jane would make them pancakes which they loved. This continued for a number of years. One day, this small band of Indians came by and warned Jonah of an eminent Indian uprising (the Great Sioux uprising of 1862) and at this time the family moved near Port Snelling, Minnesota. Later they moved to the Brooklyn Center area (now a suburb of Minneapolis) where they purchased land and farmed for many years.

Jonah and Sarah Jane are buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Sara's parents are also buried there, as are many of her relatives.
