The 1900 census shows that his birth date is July 1868 and he is 32 years of age. At that time, it show his wife Grace and his two sons, Philip H and Marshall F.

Notes for WILLIAM "WILL" FRANKLIN LOCKE:
The federal census of 1910 show that William and Mary were living with his step-daughter, Agnes Pearl Hawkins in Clarke County, Va. Following this time Will and Mollie owned and lived on a small farm of seven acres in the Greenway District, Waterloo Township, Clarke County, VA, purchased the 24th day of April, 1914, deed in Clarke County Courthouse, Berryville, VA. This farm was a part of the same land that was set off by the said Lucy Page Carter in a partition of the "Saratoga Estate" in1867 (the Saratoga farm is thousands of acres and still exists a very large parcel to date in 2000). Will and Millie sold their farm on October 12, 1940, deed registered in Clarke County Courthouse, Berryville, Va. At this time Will and Mollie moved into a small framed home built for them and owned by Mollie's daughter and son-in-law, Pearl and John Hawkins in the Township of Boyce, Clarke County, Virginia, where they lived until they died. They had an agreement between the two parties that Will and Mollie would have a lifetime residence/estate in this home. The small farm only had the remains of the barn on September 16, 2000 and the home had burned during the winter of 2000.

Will loved to do carpentry and made many small wooden items. He spent hours reading his Bible and sang in the men's choir at Boyce Methodist Church, Boyce, VA. A memory to share from Yolanda as a small child was the men were all quite old to me as a looking at them from a child's perspective. One gentleman was singing his heart out on a Sunday morning when, out flew his false teeth. That is a happening long to be remembered and at the time, gave laughter to many young folks. Will was very crippled with arthritis and walked with crutches until he became wheel chair bound a few years before his death. However, he never complained but struggled with making the best of each day.

Notes for JAMES KEMP LOCKE:
James Kemp Locke was the legal name, as found in Clarke County, Virginia Courthouse records. In the 1910 Clarke County, Virginia Census Miracode Index, he is listed as Kemp Locke, age 33. In a August 22, 1956 application for a "Delayed Certificate of Birth Before June 14, 1912" for his daughter Fannie, he lists his name as Kemp Morris Locke.

All the resources found available, refer to James Kemp as "Kemp" Locke. He is buried in Green Hill Cemetery, Clarke County, Virginia, his head stone reads Kemp Locke. While the inscription on his tombstone says 1955, a local funeral home notes his date of death as 1957.

It should be noted that Kemp's mother Elizabeth Lanham died giving birth to Kemp. Kemp married Mary Faulkner Brown, who had been abandoned as a child. Then, in 1914 after his wife Mary died following an illness from paralysis, Kemp then put his daughter, Fannie Virginia Locke and his son, Ernest Lynwood, in foster care at (Children's Home Society (C.H.S.) in Richmond, VA. Three months later, Kemp married Mattie Sowers.

Kemp filed for divorce from Mattie and received custody of their two children - Leonard and Mary Elizabeth.

The following obit appeared in the January 2, 1957 Winchester Star:
KEMP LOCKE DIES IN CHARLOTTESVILLE
Kemp Locke, 80, a resident of Berryville, died yesterday in a hospital in Charlottesville. For some years he was employee at the Battletown Inn Apartments. He was born in Clarke County on August 3, 1876. His wife, Mrs. Mattie Sowers Locke, has been dead for some time.

Survivors include three sons, Leonard Locke and Maurice Locke of Berryville and Ernest Locke of this city; two daughters, Mrs. Fannie McKean of Richmond and Mrs. Robert Hannum of Washington; one brother, Ben Locke of Charles Town, WV and one sister, Mrs. Willis of Clarke County.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The body is resting at the Enders Funeral Home.

Notes for MARY FAULKNER"MAMIE" BROWN:
Mary Faulkner Brown Locke was abandoned at the Toll Gate in Berryville. At the time she was abandoned, the Brown's were running the Toll Gate. They raised her as there daughter. Her death certificate states: mother, father, where she was born ALL is marked UNKNOWN and that certificate was then signed by Frances A. Brown. There is no records to indicate, there was an adoption. She died at the age of 35 of a paralysis with a contributory cause of "overwork". The death certificate was signed by her mother, Francis A Brown.

The following obit appeared in the 7-22-1914 Clarke (Times-Carrier), July 22,1914

Death of Mrs. Kemp Locke.
Died at the home of W. S. Brown, at the tollgate, last Saturday, following an illness from paralysis. Funeral services were held Monday Morning from the house, conducted by Rev. Julian Broaddus, D.D., and interment was made in Green Hill Cemetery. She is survived by her husband and three children.
