Notes for J
ACOB FRANKLIN LOCKE:
From the memories of Yolanda:

"Mother met my dad in her mother's home. My Grandmother, Mary Good, rented rooms to men after all the children were gone from home. My dad came from Boyce to Falls Church to take a job with "Al Cone Dealership" selling cars. He took a room at my grandmother's home and the rest is history." Mom said that the Rev. Marvin Cooper was a cousin of my Dad's. I don't really know where that fits in but another area to research. Mom talks about going to Long Island to visit yet another cousin who was a well known
Interior Decorator, lived in a large and very palatial home and had one daughter, Victoria. She said they had a son but she has no idea what his name was. Mom did return once after my parents divorced to visit these people but then through time, lost touch. She also said that Dad did some testing for General Motors when they were married. She couldn't remember what kind of testing but knew that he did something with driving cars. He also worked for a short time at the torpedo factory, Alexandria, Va, during the war.

Jake and Trilda divorced on July 19, 1945 in Fairfax, VA.

Notes for Jacob Franklin Locke:
Jake was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge, Falls Church, Virginia. He loved horses and one of his greatest pleasures was to ride. Jake never married again after Trilda. He returned from Arlington, VA, to Boyce after his father's death and lived and cared for his mother. Jake was a very happy man who never met a stranger. At a young age he gave this poem to Yolanda and said if you live your life according to this, always honest with yourself, you will never have any regrets.

MYSELF

I have to live with myself, and so
I want to be fit for myself to know.
I want to be able, as days go by,
Always to look myself straight in the eye.
I don't want to stand, with the setting sun,
And hate myself for the things I've done.
I want to go out with my head erect,
I want to deserve all men's respect.
For here in the struggle for fame and self
I want to be able to like myself.
I don't want to look at myself and know
I'm bluster, a bluff and an empty show.
I never can hide myself from me;
I see what others may never see.
I know what others may never know,
I never can fool myself, and so,
Whatever happens, I want to be
Self-respecting and conscience free.

ANNIE VIRGINIA LOCKE:
On July 15, 1915, about 1 year after Mary Faulkner "Mamie" Brown Locke died, Kemp put both, Fannie Virginia and Ernest Lynwood Locke into foster care at the Children's Home Society (C.H.S.) in Richmond, VA. ). Fannie was 14 yrs. old and Ernest was 2 1/2 yrs. old when this occurred. Fannie went out into 2 foster home situations, that didn't work out. Papers related to her placement noted that she was "unmanageable". After the second return back to C.H.S., she stayed there helping to tend to the younger children.

When Fannie got older she went to night school to learn to read and write and that is where she meant her husband James. She married James in 1926. She and James were deeply in love and these were the happiest times in her life. (Note: on her marriage certicicate she listed Morris and Annie Clarke as her parents). James died in 1945 of spinal meningitis, at Grace Hospital, Richmond, Virginia. Four years later, Fannie married Claude - this was the second marriage for both.

The following obit is found in the The Richmond Times Dispatch for Fannie:
Mrs. Virginia F. McEwen of Richmond died February 19, 1986. She is survived by her granddaughter, Linda L. Carden; three great-grandchildren, Gwendolynne A., Hope M. and William B. AMES HENRY WATERS:
James arrived to America by ship from London, England where he and his family settled in Ocean View, Virginia (close to Virginia Beach, as known today). He worked at amusement park in Ocean View until he and his family earned enough money to buy property. They bought property at the beach and turned it in to rooms for rent. He then moved to Richmond, Virginia to attend night school to learn to read, write and improve his English.

It was during this time that James met Fannie Virginia Locke. He was working as a streetcar conductor in Richmond (this is the occupation he listed on his marriage certificate in 1926). He and the family in Ocean View went on to have the Estelle family cottages built on property and they become successful rental properties. (Pictures to validate Estelle Cottages and property are available in records maintained at the Ocean View, Virginia court house). When James applied for his social security card in 1936, he was working for Virginia Electric and Power Company. James died in 1945 at the age of 58 of spinal meningitis, at Grace Hospital, Richmond, Virginia.

The following obituary is found in the May 30, 1945 The Richmond Times Dispatch for James:

424. ERNEST LINWOOD (LYNWOOD)7 LOCKE (JAMES KEMP6, FRANKLIN HOWARD5, JOHN4, WILLIAM3, GEORGE W2, JOHN1) was born September 25, 1912 in Berryvile, Clarke Co, VA, and died October 27, 1987 in Winchester, VA410. Notes for E
RNEST LINWOOD (LYNWOOD) LOCKE:
On July, 15, 1915, Ernest (along with his sister Fannie) was placed in the foster care at (Children's Home Society (C.H.S.) 1 year after his mother died in 1914. Ernest was 2 1/2 years old at the time. Ernest and Fannie were placed in sepearate homes. However, Fannie's 1st placement did not work out and she was brought back to the CHS at which time she was placed with her brother. Ernest stayed in this foster home. His foster parents had high expectations and were "well-to-do". Their naural children were well educated. However, Ernest had never attended school before his placement and had little regard for education. He failed third grade. When his guardian died, Ernest ran away. Authorities in Roanoke put Ernest into Juvenile Detention and placed him in a boarding home in Roanoke. This placement did not work out well for Ernest either. However, by then, his sister had married James Henry Waters and Ernest went to live with them in 1925-1926 in Richmond, VA. When the social worker finally went to visit Ernest in 1932, Ernest had already had moved out (he was 20 years old by then) and was living in Manteo, VA. With the help of his friends, he moved into a house with the Ransom family. His father told the social worker that Ernest was very happy there and well adjusted in his new home.

When Ernest applied for his social security card, he indicated his father as Kemp Locke but mother's maiden name as unkown. It shows he was born in Berryville, Clarke Co, VA. It also shows his birth year as 1911 not 1912.

Ernest and Nellye were second cousins.
