Notes for J
OSHUA MULLINS, SR.:
Mary Agnes Mullins’ brother Joshua served with Edward Polley in the Revolution. Apparently they were good friends. Joshua married Bess Turley, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, on March 7, 1786. I have a copy of the marriage bond, for fifty pounds, made by Joshua and his brother James to Patrick Henry Esq. Joshua, and James Turley, Bess' father signed the document by making their mark. Whether Joshua and Edward left for Tennessee at the same time I do not know, but that is most likely, since migrating in family groups was the common practice. Sometime later, in Tennessee, Bess died, and Joshua married Ann Robinson.

Several of these relatives and friends and their families left Virginia for Tennessee sometime in the 1790's. The first five children of Edward and Mary Agnes were born in Virginia. They lived in Tennessee for some thirteen years. By 1805, they had moved into, what was then, Floyd County, Kentucky. Most of the children were still at home in Floyd County at the time of the 1810 census. In the Floyd County court reports is the following item dated March 1814: "Report of the road from Charles Lewis' to the mouth of Rockhouse received. Ordered that Edward Polly be appointed supervisor of the same." It should be noted that the great majority of Polleys who are descendants of Edward spell their name without the (e). I have always used the (e) as did all of my father's brothers. Accordingly I have used that spelling although it is not the way that is most common. The same is true for other names. I have arbitrarily chosen one of the alternate spellings. However, there may be exceptions from time to time. Now I will give some information on my own background.

Notes for E
DWARD POLLY:
Edward Polley served, for 18 months as a private in the Virginia Line during the Revolutionary War. He, along with Joshua Mullins and William Buckner, enlisted in a company headed by Captain Burton, in a regiment led by Colonel Gibson.

They enlisted in September 1780, and were discharged February 28, 1781. Edward was transferred to a company led by Isaac Webb. He applied for a pension November 17, 1825. At the time he was living in Perry County, Kentucky. His pension, begun in February 1828, was $8.00 a month. When applying for the pension, he listed as property: 1 horse ($30.), 8 cattle/2 pigs ($40.), 8 sheep ($8.), 4 barrows/16 pigs ($14.), 50 acres of poor land, and owed to him the sum of $5.50. The total estimated value of his estate was $142.50.

After eight years in Virginia, Edward and Mary moved west to Carter County in Eastern Tennessee, where they lived for thirteen years. They then moved to Floyd County, Kentucky where they lived until Edward died in 1845. They were living in Perry County, which was formed from part of Floyd County, at the time of his application for a pension.

The part of Perry County where he lived became part of Letcher County when it was formed in 1842. Mary Mullins Polley applied for a widow's pension June 7, 1847 in Letcher County, Kentucky (Edward had died May 19, 1845). She was living then with Randolph Polley, her grandson, and my great-grandfather. In her application she stated that she was married by a Baptist minister named Bailey, but that no record was made of the marriage. In 1994 I went to Pittsylvania County looking for information on the family, but I found no record of their marriage (At that time I had not yet seen her pension application). Mary also said that they lived in Pittsylvania County, Virginia for eight years before moving west.
