Served in Col. John Hunt Morgan's Confederate Calvary and was the last Confederate veteran to die in Nicholas Co., KY.
In the Summer of 1935, he was laid to rest in the Rose Hill Cemetery in the community where he spent all of his adult life.
Cornelius Wagoner was from a large family and he married at an early age.
His brave, courageous, patriotic spirit urged him to volunteer at the beginning of the Civil War, even though it meant leaving his wife, Elizabeth, one small child and expecting another, to survive as best they could.
He belonged to the John Hunt Morgan Calvary Division. Most of his service was confined to the southern states, 11 to be exact.
Many times, these tired, half-clad and hungry soldiers had to eat raw oysters, which they found from the southeastern coast, because their supplies were shut off. Many times the hour of patriotism, danger and starvation met them face to face, but they faced it bravely even in times of retreat.
When the war was over, tired and worn out, he winded his way toward home. On the way home he became very ill, partly from weakness and exhaustion. Finally, he reached home to find his wife and children secure and unhappy to have him home and finally gave him orders to leave.
A few years later he bought a small farm from Andy Banta, where he remained the rest of his life. The farm contained 57 acres of land at $15.00 per acre.
"Uncle Neal", as he was affectionately called, remained a farmer and was a devout Methodist. His home became an Inn for the Circuit Riders to stop overnight, rest, eat and enjoy Christian fellowship.
The night was never too dark or the day too hot for him to give help in time of need. He lived with this attitude, lending help to anyone in need.
