Find Family

This is a labour of love ... a gift for my family, both past and present.

My ancestors were predominantly farmers though weavers, tailors and fishermen are also represented. The majority were Ulster Scot from Northern Ireland where they lived in shod shanties with dirt floors. They would have come to Ireland from Scotland in the 1600's during the Ulster Plantation. Thanks to the Polperro Family History Society I have found a great deal of information about my ancestors from Cornwall. Living in quaint cottages and sea-side villages, some undoubtedly involved in the smuggling trade. My earliest ancestor to come to Canada was John Mooney from Tipperary who arrived with his 3 daughters about 1820. At least one adventurous gg-grandfather joined the California Gold Rush. I am grateful for their strength, their spirit and their sense of adventure. Each one has a story yet to be discovered.

Chuck's ancestors were a little more diverse and certainly more colourful. His paternal side were farmers in Switzerland. His mother's family included Puritans that arrived in 'The New World' as early as 1624; Pennsylvania Quakers; the founder of New York; a Signer of the Declaration of Independence; United Empire Loyalists that came to Canada in 1783; King Edward I of England and various other Kings, Queens and Nobles. As well as being great material for an amateur genealogist it has been fascinating for anyone in the family with an interest in history.

The search continues. It will always be a work in progress...
