Below is a letter from Edgar Byler, of Wayne Co. Tn. Whitten researcher
I don't know where grandfather George Whitten b. 1787 (note: as far as I know his name was George Whitten, NOT George W. Whitten) got an education. He could definitely read and write and appears to have received some schooling, but where I do not know. It was said he brought a large library of books with him from SC to TN, but I have only family tradition for that.
George W. Whitten (b. 1825) his son did serve as a JP and member of the County Court for a number of years after the war. George W. Whitten, b. 1825, was also a Mason and a member of the lodge on Middle Cypress creek in the 1880's, I've seen a copy of his certificate.
History and genealogy have always been an interest of mine. I took both my degrees in American History. The Whitten clan has been one of the harder families to research because so many of the family moved around a lot. As Methodist ministers they were posted to a new pastorate every year or two and that makes it very difficult to find them in census records.
Bill Page in Texas sent me a url for the Bible record of Uncle Joel Whitten (1792-1860), George's brother. There had been a lot of speculation about his family composition, but this record finally disposed of that. And the Bible record finally proved that Melton (Milton) Whitten (1820-1858) was his son. In 1972 (and again in Marlese's booklet) Melton Whitten (1820-1858) was listed as a son of George (1787-1856). We finally proved him not George's son, but didn't know who his father was. The Joel Whitten Bible record proves he was Joel's son, as I had speculated to Bill.
Back in the 1970's I corresponded with a Mrs. Edward Kamarit of Biloxi, MS who was descended from Turner M. Whitten, b. 1821. At the time I had Melton as George's son, and didn't know that Turner was a son of George. Now that we have proven that Turner M. Whitten was George's son, I've been going back through Mrs. Kamarit's letters trying to piece together Uncle Turner's family. Turner M. Whitten died in Paris, TX in 1901.
