"The Garth family derived its name from the old English word "girth", meaning circumference or girdle. (Webster Unabridged Dictionary) Nancy Garth who married John Ford was the daughter of David Garth of Goochland Co., Virginia. The record of the marriage is found in the old Ford family Bible, brought from South Carolina to Kentucky ca. 1796.
One John Garth is of record in Louisa County, Virginia, leaving his will there in 1786. (Torrance: Wills and Administrations, p. 165). The children named were: Thomas Garth, David Garth, John Garth, Sarah Mousby, Betty Rose (Ross), and Mary Ann Lobbins. These young people were attracted, like so many others, to the unimproved western lands once occupied by the Indians. The tax lists of 1800 in adjoining Albemarle County show the names of a half dozen Garth households, who at a later date had migrated over the Blue Ridge mountains to the Ohio valley."

excerpt from "The History of Whitesville, Kentucky" by Anna Hamilton and Don Greenwell, 1982.
page 6
"A familiar sight around Deserter Creek, beginning around 1800, was Cornelius Westerfield, a farmer...Mr. Westerfield's taste for good whiskey and money brought him to the idea of making his own. About 1810, he began distilling corn on his farm near the banks of Deserter Creek, three miles southwest of what is now Whitesville. It was a profitable business, so much so, that his family continued it for three generations...fifty years later, during the Civil War, Cornelius (Jr.) was selling his product to both federals and confederates."

  Notes for Elizabeth Bruce:
Listed on 1860 Ohio County, Kentucky census (Fordsville) as living with daughter, Elizabeth, and her husband William Nelson, with their six children. Her age is given as 70, that she is a widow and boarder, that she has $1000 in real estate and $1100 in personal estate. It is marked that she can't read or write.

[Note by BJWH: On the microfilm, the year of David's birth looks more like *1829* to me, although it is not written carefully. There are frequent errors in this census in which it seems that the census taker subtracted the age from 1900, but made an error which resulted in a birth 10 years too late. Joe put question marks by questionable years in his transcription.
If he had subtracted 81 from 1900, he should have gotten *1819*, which agrees with all of the other censuses, with an article in an Ohio Co., KY newspaper ca. 1880's about the number of descendants David had, and giving his age at the time, and also with his obituary, which said, in the old manner, that he was in his 67th year, (i. e. 66 years old, as a baby was in its first year during the year *before* its first birthday), when he died in 1905. If only one census indicated that he was born in 1819, that could be discounted as an error, but when five censuses and two other papers all indicate a 1819 birth, that seems to be pretty conclusive. Note that Mollie Frances/Florence's age is also off by 10 years. She would have been 22 in Sept., after Census Day, not 12, so her birth year should have been 1878.]
