Notes for James Magan:
The name McGann is in Irish MacCanna or MacAnnaidh. In Irish "mac" means son of and Canna or Annaidh means wolf cub. Therefore a direct English translation is "son of the wolf cub". The family or clan were most prominant around the southern shore of Lough Neagh in what is now County Armagh, and were known as McCann. The name McGann is thought to be a Connaught (area in western Ireland) form of the name McCann. However, another source says the McGann's were a prominent family in County Westmeath in central Ireland. Other branches of the family existed in County Clare. In the 1800's County Clare was a part of Connaught.
