R FRANCIS WHELCHEL:
Dr Whelchel and his four sons, Francis Jr, John, Davis and William fought at the Battles of Kings Mountain and the Battle of Cowpens, fought on 17 Jan 1781. Cowpens (or Hannah's Cowpens) was used for the fattening of cattle.

Cowpens is located along the Spartenburg Co line in SC. The battle was an American victory. The American force of 740 saw 12 killed and 60 wounded. The British force of 1150 saw 200 killed or wounded and 600 prisoners.

John Whelchel received 7 wounds during the battle, leaving his brain exposed; and several wounds to the shoulder. He was left on the battlefield, supposed that he would die, when Dr Whelchel came along and found him and attended to his wounds.
