Samuel Cottom was born in Pennsylvania November 12, 1858. Died May 18, 1924, at his home near Denmark at the age of 66 years. He came to Illinois when a small boy. In early years he was married to Maggie Higgerson. To this union four children were born, Harry and John, Mrs. Leonard (Clara) Wills of Murphysboro and Mrs. Fred (Grace) Moore of Sparta. He was again married to Mrs. Lacy Wilderman August 7, 1917, who was with him when the end came. He united with the Denmark Baptist Church when a young man and has been a very faithful member all these years. It was an event very uncommon to go to church on Sunday morning and not see Uncle Sam, as he was familiarly known, sitting in the front pew and listening to the word of God. He has done his lifeÙus work well, but now as God saw fit to call him Home, he has left a world of sorrow and gone to meet his loved ones over there. He leaves to mourn his sad departure his faithful and loving wife, four children, three grandchildren, 5 step children and three brothers. Peace be to the memory of Uncle Sam Cottom. source: "Margery"
