Note:
Simon William Cottom, son of Simon and Naomi Cottom was born in Beaver County, PA July 22, 1852. Departed this life at his home about five miles north of Ava on Monday, March 25, 1929, at 3:00 p.m., at the age of 76 years, 8 months, and 3 days. About the age of 15 years, he came
with his parents from Pennsylvania to Illinois and settled on a farm near what is Denmark now.
He was of a family of fourteen children, all having preceded him in death except two brothers, Reuben and Daniel Cottom, both of Cutler. In early youth he was married to Miss Mary Edgar. Three daughters were born to this union---Mrs. Minnie Koen, who departed this life January 19, 1921. Mrs. Bertha Speith and Mrs. Elsie Russell, who reside near the home place. The wife and mother died and he was married this time to Miss Emma Sandusky of Murphysboro. Eight children were born to this union, Mrs. Belva Kelley of Pinckneyville Route 4; Mrs. Grace Higgerson and Mrs. Lula Higgerson both of Cutler Route 2; William of Aledo and Walter, Earl, Ruth, and Harold Cottom still in the parental home. Besides the brothers, the wife and children heretofore mentioned, he is survived by 16 grandchildren, and 8
great grandchildren, with a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held in the
Prebysterian Church in Ava on Wednesday, March 27th, 1929 at 1:00 p. m., conducted by Eld. Marion Wilson. Internment in the Ava Evergreen Cemtery.
