CRAIN, JAMES CPT L 13 IL US CAV CON PINCKNEYVILLE
Captian James Crain, aged 75 years, 4 months and 2 days, died Tuesday morning at 6 o'clock at his home on West Broadway after a long illness from a complication of diseases incident with old age.
James Crain was born in Perry County, Ill. When the Civil War broke out he enlisted as a private in Company A, of the Thirty-Fifth Illinois Infantry. He soon rose in ranks, becoming second lieutenant and then first lieutenant of the comapny. In 1865 he became captain of Comapny L of the Illinois cavalry and served until the close of the war. He returned to his old home when the treaty of peace was signed and lived there amid happy and contented surroundings. In May, 1891, he moved with his family to Ozark County, locating near Dora. For many years he and his sons engaged in the lumber business and operated saw mills at different points in Ozark County. Last May Captain Crain, accompanied by his wife moved to West Plains.
The deceased is survived by a wife and seven sons and daughters. They are Mrs. John Fannin, Pinckneyvill, Ill.; Mrs. Ira Woodward, Dora, Mo.; Mrs. Walter Cooper, Greenfield, Ill.; Ed and Alex Crain, Tangier, Okla.; Pleas and Ben Crain, of this city. Captain Crain had for more than forty years been a memeber of the Masonic Fraternity, under whose auspices the funeral was held Wednesday afternoon. Rev. J. Halls Glanville, pastor of the First Presbyterian Chruch, preached the sermon. The remains were laid to rest in Oak Grove cemetery. Mt. Zion Lodge No. 327, A. F. & A. M.
