I've managed to trace the Hargreaves family back to 1841, when Joseph was 1. His father John Hargreaves was already a cotton manufacturer and they were living in Tong End, Whitworth. John was 39 and his wife Mary 38. Eldest child was Elizabeth, 11, followed by Mary, 8, James, 6, Jonathan, 4, and Joseph. Also there is John Maden, 15yo cotton power loom weaver.
An extract from the book 'Industrial Heritage, a Guide to the Industrial Archaeology of Whitworth', by Mike Rothwell says that the Hargreaves family were probably handloom weavers at Tong End before taking over Cowm Mill.

In 1851 there is more information available. The family are still at Tong End. John is 49 and cotton manufacturer, employing 10 men, 10 women, 2 boys and 2 girls. Mary is 48. Elizabeth is 21 and does domestic duties, Mary is 18 and a cotton power loom weaver. So is James, 15, and Jonathan, 13. Joseph, 11, is still at school. John H Maden is described as John's stepson. He is 26yo cotton piece looker, born in Parish of Whalley, Lancashire. Elizabeth, Mary and James are also born Whalley, but the others - including their parents are born in Rochdale.

In 1861 they are at 20 Tong End. John is 58 and a widower, so Mary must have died (The ancestors of Joan Hargreaves say he married twice - Mary x2). By now he is a cotton manufacturer employing 131 females and 70 males. John Henry Maden is next on the list, as cotton mill manager, and this time he is described as John's son-in-law. Whether this is a mistake in transcription or given because it was more socially acceptable I'm not sure but he cannot be son-in-law because he'd been with the family since he was at least 15. Mary is 28 and still single, as is James, 25, a warehouseman. Jonathan is also unmarried at 23 and so is Joseph, a 21yo warehouseman. This time they are all listed as born in Bacup, except Joseph, born Spotland, most likely Whitworth. Could it be that Bacup was classed in Parish of Whalley and that is why Whalley was given 10 years earlier? They also have a servant, Mary Ann Leach, born Rochdale, who is 12.

By 1871 James and Joseph have moved out, taking up residence in what looks like adjoining houses in Birch View, Whitworth, which must be close to the present day Birches pub, as all other addresses on the sheet also have a reference to Birch. James is unmarried and 35. He is described as a cotton spinner, employing 158 males and 196 females, and born in Bacup. He has two servants, 33yo Jane Mauncey from Manchester and Eliza Whitingham, 20, from Montgomeryshire, Wales. Joseph had married Isabella, 10 years his junior. He is cotton spinner warehouseman, born Rochdale. Isabella was born Oldham.

In 1881 John Henry Maden has one side of Abbotsford House and Joseph Hargreaves the other. John Maden is 55 and a cotton manufacturer, born in Bacup. His wife Lucy is 44 and from Burnley. They have a daughter Edith, 13, son and two sons: John 11, and Frederic, 8. They are all scholars, born Whitworth. Servant is 18yo Sarah Ann Ball from Ketley (?) in Shropshire. Joseph Hargreaves is now 41 and Isabella 31. Joseph is cotton spinner manufacturer, employing 470. Children are Mary Jane, 9, Lilian, 9, and Alfred, 6. Servant is Betsy Baliton, 24, from Coale (Coates?) in Cambridgeshire.

In 1891 I think I've found Joseph Hargreaves' son Alfred, now 16, at boarding school in Grimsargh, near Longridge, Lancashire. It is called St John's college and seems to take pupils from 10 to 17. I can't find any other members of the family anywhere, which is strange.

In 1901 Isabella is widowed, so Joseph must have died. She is now 51. Alfred is 26 and seems to have taken over from his father, as he is now cotton spinner and manufacturer / employer. Mary A is 29 and Lillian is 27. They are both single and their occupations are not given, nor are any servants listed. John Holroyd, 46yo cotton spinner / employer from Todmorden, is now living in the other side of Abbotsford House with his 44yo wife Sarah and their 4 children.
