| Dear Loreths (Lorets, Loretts, Lorettes), Stremicks (Stromick), Wohns, Schneiders (Synder), Hoeflings (Hofling), Tweetens (Tveiten) and Kolstads, Who are we? Where did we come from? Are we all somehow related? Was one of these similar last names the root surname? Was Loreth at one time the name of a trade or a location as is typical of so many surnames in Europe? There are many unanswered questions and it appears that the importance of maintaining family records may have escaped the attention of our ancestors, or whatever genealogical records that might have been kept have not been found, or are now lost. I have been working on the Loreth genealogy on and off for a number of years, a daunting task at best given the lack of documentable genealogical facts available. This endeavor to develop a family tree has involved gathering limited information about and from Loreths, Lorets, Loretts and Lorettes in the United States, Canada, Austria, Germany, Poland and the Ukraine. The vast majority of the information is based on family stories passed down from one generation to the next. I have then attempted to compare and interpret the stories, incorporate into these stories the scarce amount of facts available, then correlate this information with the history of emigration and immigration in and from Central Europe for the past three to four hundred years. Finally, I have attempted to draw some general conclusions about our family history. I am sure that some of these genealogical conclusions will be reinforced and some will be disproved, as I continue to gather additional information. I am also working on other surnames related to my family tree. These names on my side include: include Wohn, Schneider, Hoefling (Hoeffling) and Stremick(stromick). Then on my wife's side: Tweeten (Tveiten) and Kolstad. I certainly welcome any and all family information or questions. It will be interesting to find out if we have any common ancestors Dennis |
