Samuel L. was first married to Ann Maria Forrester and had 10 children. Ann lived from 1824-1857. They came to Indiana in 1863 having previously purchased a quarter section of land in Wells county. They were devout Methodists, the father being the class leader for many years and was always zealous in good work. He was a Democrat in political views, and a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons.
