Report on the Ancestry of James Gibson, who married Margaret Butchart in 1883, prepared by the Scots Ancestry Research Society, 20 York Place, Edinburgh 1, Scotland for Mrs. S. A. Darling 10 January 1969. The marriage of James Gibson and Margaret Butchart was found to have been recorded as follows: “10th April 1883 at Barry Road, Carnoustie, Barry, after Banns according to the Forms of the Free Church of Scotland. James Gibson, shipmaster, Merchant Service, bachelor, aged 34, of Dundee Street. The son of William (sic) Gibson, master builder, and Agnes Simpson, both deceased AND Margaret Butchart, grocer’s daughter, spinster, aged 29, of Barry Road. The daughter of David Butchart, master grocer, and Catherine Curtis Leitch.” Prior to 1855 registrations of Births, Deaths and Marriages in Scotland were voluntarily recorded in the old parochial registers (unindexed of each parish). The old parochial registers of Barry were accordingly searched for the birth of James Gibson, which was found to have been recorded there thus: “21st November 1848 James son of William Gibson, mason, Carnoustie, and of his spouse Agnes Simpson was born on 21st day of November and baptized on the 31st of December.” Other children found to have been recorded to the above couple in the old parochial registers of Barry were: Henry born 7:2:1833 Jean born 5th Nov. baptised 14:12:1834 Barbara born 7th Sept. baptised 2:10:1836 Janet born 12th Sept. baptised 13:9:1838 William born 23rd May baptised 21:6:1840 David born 28th June baptised 24:7:1842 Agnes born 23rd Sept. baptised 5:11:1854” The marriage of William Gibson and Agnes Simpson was then found to have been recorded in the old parochial registers of Barry as follows: “William Gibson and Agnes Simpson, both in their parish contracted 31st March and proclaimed 1st and 8th April, 1832.” The 1861 Census Schedules for Barry was next consulted and the following entry was found: “Address: Dundee Street, Carnoustie William Gibson, head of the house, aged 53, master mason employing 3 apprentices and 11 men, born in Monikie Agnes, his wife, aged 46 born in Barry Henry, his son, aged 28, born in Barry Jane, his daughter, aged 26, born in Barry Barbara, his daughter, aged 24, born in Barry Jessie, his daughter, aged 22, born in Barry William, his son, aged 20, born in Barry David, his son, aged 18, born in Barry James, his son, aged 12, born in Barry Agnes, his daughter, aged 6, born in Barry” William Gibson was then found to have died on May 15, 1878 at Carnoustie, Barry. He was described in his death entry, as a mason and contractor, aged 70, widower of Agnes Simpson, and the son of Henry Gibson, flax dresser and crofter, and Jane Gibson, maiden surname Gibson. Both deceased. The old parochial registers of Monikie were next searched for the birth of William Gibson, which was found to have been recorded there thus: “28th May 1807 Henry Gibson and Jean (sic) Gibson his spouse in Husbanton had a son named William baptised on the 9th of June.” Other children found to have been recorded to the above couple in the old parochial registers of Monikie were: “Jean, baptised 9:4:1800 James, baptised 22:6:1801 Isabel, born 8th, baptised 23:8:1803 Susan, born 17th, baptised 29:8:1805 Jannet, born 1st, baptised 21:5:1810 The marriage of Henry Gibson and Jane Gibson was then found to have been recorded in the old parochial registers of Monikie as follows: “6th April 1799 Henry (sic) Gibson and Jane (sic) Gibson, both in this parish were contracted.” The 1851 Census Schedules for Monikie were next consulted, but Henry Gibson and Jane Gibson were not found to have been living there in that year. The old parochial registers of Monikie were then searched from 1764 to 1782 for the birth of Henry Gibson and the following entry was found: “4th December 1766 David Gibson and Ann Greig in Broomwell had a child baptised before the congregation named Henry.” Other children found to have been recorded to the above couple in the old parochial registers of Monikie were: “William, baptised 22:5:1759 (presumably died young) David, baptised 14:7:1760 Anna, baptised 27:7:1762 William, baptised 6:1:1765 Margaret, baptised 14:10:1769 Isobel, baptised 24:6:1772 Jannet, baptised 21:6:1778” As there are no extant marriage records for Monikie from 1735 to 1742 for the birth of David Gibson, and the following entry was found there: “11th March 1735 Henry Gibson and his spouse in Boghall had twins baptised by Mr. Dall the one named David and the other name John.” Other children found to have been recorded to Henry Gibson in the old parochial registers of Monikie were: “William, baptised May 1726 (no date given) Ann, baptised 30:5:1728 Alexander, baptised 30:8:1730 Andrew, baptised 8:5:1733 The old parochial registers of Monikie were then searched for the marriage of Henry Gibson and the following entry was found: “27th June 1725, Henry Gibson in this parish producing a Testimonial of his contract with Elspet Ramsay in the Parish of Inverarity and in favours of the woman was proclaimed this day with the said woman in order to marriage for the first time.” The old parochial registers of Monikie were then searched from 1635 to 1705 for the birth of Henry Gibson but this was not found to have been recorded there. The old parochial registers of the neighbouring parishes of Monikie, which are Guthrie, Inverarity (records commence in 1710), Barmyllie, Panbride (records commence in 1693), Barry (records commence in 1705), Monifieth (records commence in 1698) were next searched, where possible from 1685 to 1705 for the birth of Henry Gibson, but this was not found to have been recorded among the extant records for any of these parishes, and the investigation was accordingly here concluded.
