The family of ELEASAR LOEWENSTEIN (Lazar ben Loeb) lived and
carried on a prosperous grain trade in BRECKENHEIM, Wallau and
Erbenheim, near Wiesbaden (Hesse-Nassau) from before 1750 until 1936.
Benjamin Lowenstein was the first to come to the USA 1n 1883 but
most of his 12 siblings and their 46 children followed. Those family names include Barmann, Kuhn, Herz, Lowenthal, Weiss,
Weingaertner and Lorch.
Eleasar married Zerline Moses, daughter of MOSES MOSES from
BEERFELDEN in the Odenwald. He was son of Feist MOSES and grandson of Daniel Gedaliah Moses. Some of the Moses, also from
Beerfelden, Hessen, adopted the surnames ROSENTHAL &
SONDHEIMER. Many of the MOSES from Beerfelden settled in Baltimore, Washington and New York during the 19th Century.
Other family names connected to the 18th Century
Lowenstein family history are WOLF(f) (Pfungstadt) LAZARUS > KAHN
(Diedenbergen) CAHN (Breckenheim).
A brother of the first Loewenstein took the name CAHN and was the head of an equally large family from Breckenheim.
The youngest of Eleasar's sons was my grandfather, Alfred who
married Auguste Scheuer, daughter of Gerson Wolf SCHEUER and
Rike nee REIS(s) Scheuer from MICHELFELD, Baden.
While my maternal family also came to the USA from Germany, they did so earlier, between 1848 and 1868.
Simon KUPFER, b.7/1/1830, came from Bergkunstadt, Bavaria
where his large family had lived for generations. Family names there include Oppenheimer and Bamberger.
Simon came to Oberlin Ohio to become partners with MARX (aka Max & Mark) STRAUS in a clothing business there. He married his
partner's sister, Binchen STRAUS KUPFER from Udenheim near
Mainz. The Kupfers later lived in Philadelphia, Bloomington, IL, and New York.
CLEMENTINE KUPFER married her first cousin (once removed)
GUSTAV C. STRAUS (B. Kaiserslautern, Rheinpfalz, then Bavaria.
12/22/1851). Gustav Straus the only son of Michael STRAUS from Udenheim near Mainz and Rosa Caroline GOETZ from Hochspeyer near Kaiserslautern. Gus STRAUS had 5 sisters, all born in Kaiserslautern who married to South Africa during the diamond boom of the 1870's. Their family names became LOWENTHAL, DAVIS, WOOLLEY, HARTOG AND OPPENHEIMER. A 6th sister married Adolph HAMBERG in Arkansas but had no children.

GUS STRAUS had extensive cotton land holdings in LONOKE,
ARKANSAS, and a chain of dry goods stores throughout central
Arkansas called "DANIEL & STRAUS". His parter, Dan Daniel, was a cousin through the GOETZ family of Hochspeyer (Kaiserslautern.)
Before comming to Lonoke Gus worked with a cousin, ABRAHAM RUBLE, in his store in Corinth, MS. Another cousin, Ferdinand GATES (changed from GOETZ)helped Gus become established in LONOKE.
Later Gus and his wife and mother-in-law, Binchen Straus Kupfer, moved to LITTLE ROCK where Gus was in the carraige and livery business. In 1892 they moved to GLOVERSVILLE and NEW YORK CITY, New York.

MICHAEL STRAUS and the father of BINCHEN STRAUS KUPFER,
and another brother, name unknown whose son, AUGUST joined the
Oberlin and Elyhria OH business of Max /Mark Straus were 3 of 10
STRAUS brothers from UDENHEIM.
