"David Crocket HUMPHREY was orphaned at 14 years of age. The court indentured him to his mother's brother (his uncle), Brice Chisem JOHNSON for a period of 7 years to learn the trade of farming. He spent that time near West Point, GA. He was single and living with his brother George W. HUMPHREY and his family during the 1850 census. He met and married Sophronia H. MORRIS in September 1850 in Troup Co, GA. They lived in Rome, GA until the end of the Civil War in 1865.
The West Point - Atlanta Railroad was completed in 1854. David was a railroad engineer during this time and worked for the state owned railroad. He was said to have driven the last locomotive across the Chatahoocie River, before the last bridge was destroyed, to delay Sherman's taking of Atlanta in Dec 1864. He was honored for his heroism.
