I am researching Thomas LOWERY born about 1807 somewhere in GA and died in Nacogdoches Co, TX about 1867. Not much is known about Thomas prior to his coming to San Augustine Co, TX. A Thomas LURRY (sic) married a Sarah PARKER in Newton Co, GA on 1 Jan1831.
He had three sons that were born in Pike Co. They were: George born about 1832, John born in 1833, and Needham born about1835. It is not known if his wife made the trip to Texas or not. It is assumed that she died either in childbirth of Needham or shortly after. Thomas’s son John, stated in his pension application, that he was born in Pike Co, AL which led us to assume all of the sons were born there.
A Thomas LOWRIE bought a land patent from the State of AL in Pike Co, AL which was finalized and approved in 1837. He also bought a parcel of land near his land patent from Robert FRANKLIN. Thomas sold his property in Pike Co, AL in Jan 1836.
He was reported to have gone to TX, probably looking for a place to live, and then returned to AL to bring his family to San Augustine Co, TX. He arrived late spring 1836 missing the fight for independence.
While visiting in Troy, Pike Co, AL, I found the deeds showing where Thomas sold the property in Pike Co in 1836. One of the documents, was a release of dowery, signed by his “wife” Callie LOWRIE. This has confused this researcher due to the thought that Thomas’s wife Sarah had died and he did not marry Callie GODWIN until 1838 in San Augustine Co, TX. Recently I have found info leading me to look at Callie GODWIN as being the daughter of Ephraim GODWIN and a niece of Nathan GODWIN both who died in Pike Co, AL. Both wills were dated after the 1838 marriage of Callie and Thomas, and both mentioned Callie in their wills.
There was a George LOWERY born about 1798 in GA who was living very near Thomas in the same part of western Pike Co. George married Elizabeth COX in 1813 Franklin Co, GA. George and family moved to Union Parish, LA about 1848.
A James LOWREY born about 1789 in SC or NC was living very close to George but in Butler Co, AL. These three pieces of property all became part of Crenshaw Co, AL when it was formed in 1867.
There is no proof that either of these two LOWERYs were closely related to Thomas. Our DNA research has not confirmed a close relationship but has raised the question that their might be some validity to it. A descendant of George LOWERY has participated in the DNA research and has found to be only 1 genetic distance from my DNA. This does confirm a common ancestor but due to limited paper trail and no other matches, we can not confirm the relationships.
I am also looking for information on the following families that have direct ties to Thomas. They are as follows: SOWELL (AL,GA,NC,&TX), CROW (TN & TX), BROWN (TN &TX), NORWOOD (NC & TX).
Am also interested in HUMPHREY, ALSOBROOK, HARRISON, PHILLIPS, BEAUCHAMP, FRIED, OTIS, & WILSON. mostly from NC, SC, GA, AL,TN,& TX from the early 1820 to 1910.
