Branntweinbrenner in Hochlibin (?) bei Zedwitz.

Celia Male, Austria-Czech SIG on JewishGenealogy wrote in an e-mail, 1/23/2006:
Jehudah was one of the many distillers who took leases on properties and moved around. By 1793 he was already settled in Petrowitz (Rakonitzer Kreis) as a "Bestand Jude in herrsdhaftlichen Haus", i.e. He had the distilling and potash concession from the Lord of the Manor. His name is given as Juda and he is married to Anna. He is listed as being a zustandig in Hochliben (resident in good standing).
[Hochlibin is now Vysoka Libyna ]

In 1726, due to the order of the Habsburg ruler Charles VI, the number of Jewish families was limited by quota to 8,541 in Bohemia and 5,106 in Moravia. To enforce this quota (or "numerus clausus"), a so-called "Familianten" order was issued. According to this order, only the first-born son of each Jewish family was given permission to marry (called a "copulatio consensus"). The permits could also be sold if there were no son to inherit them. The Familianten order was in force until 1848. As a result, many Jews who could not obtain marriage permits emigrated from the towns in which they were born, and even from their countries of origin. Bohemia and Moravia. For example, by 1900 almost half of the Jews in Hungary were of Bohemian or Moravian descent.
