Notes for N
ATHAN KUSSY:
When the Kussy family arrived in Bohemia, then part of the Austrian Empire, they settled in Prasne Ujezd. Tradition has it that they originated in France. According to information sent to me by Jiri Fiedler, before 1799 the name Kussy was not mentioned in Prasne Ujezd. In 1799 One Moses Kussy lived in Rabstejn nad Strelou. in 1812 control of main farmstead went to Nathan Kussy, and from 1839-1856 no Kussy owned property in Prasne Ujezd. They moved from Prasne Ujezd to Krashowitz, now called Krasovice. Later, they settled in Scheles, which is now Zihle. They made the move to Scheles when Gustave was serving in the army.

Nathan had a brother who was the father of Shaya of Krashowitz, who was known for his strength. They were the only two Jewish families in Krashwitz, which Sarah describes as a "dump." The family attended religious services in Potvorov , which was a long walk across the fields from Krashowitz. In Potvorov, the upper story of a small house had been outfitted as a synagogue.

We found a grave for a Nathan Kussy who was buried at Rabstejn. The stone said he was 85 at his death and the date of death was 13 May either 1860 or 1880. In her writings, Sarah refers to her grandfather as being about 70 when his nephew, Siegfried Kohn, was 17. Siegfried was born in 1850, so that puts Nathan's birth in about 1797. However, the stone looked as if the date of death was in the 1860s.
Sarah also wrote that her father visited his mother during her childhood around the time he built the Spruce Street house and by that time, his father was dead.
