1. THOMAS¹ WALFORD was born c 1590 in England ^1,^2,^3,⁴, and died Nov-1666 in Portsmouth, Rockingham, NH ⁵. He married JANE, ACCUSED WITCH^6,^7,⁸. She was born c 1596 in /of Charlestown, Suffolk, MA ⁹, and died 07-Sep-1681 ^10,¹¹.

Immigrated as one of 6 men with Captain Robert Gorges in 1622 [Geneal. Dictionary of Maine, by Noyes, page 713]

Thomas sailed from England to Boston and became the original inhabitant of Charlestown, Massachusetts. Thomas and Jane removed to Portsmouth, Rockingham, NH about 1631.

Notes for JANE, ACCUSED WITCH:
Jane was accused of witchcraft in 1656, but was acquitted in 1669 after successfully suing Robert Couch for slander, but received only a token $5. According to present day references, descriptions of Jane Walford (who was "witnessed" transforming into a variety of cats) have evolved into the classic picture of the New England witch with the pointed black hat! Interestingly, one of Jane's daughters, Hannah (Walford) JONES, was also accused of witchcraft in 1682 after she protested when the land she inherited from her father was "reclaimed" by others.
