Notes for D
"The Lundy family came from Bristol, England by ship in 1676 and landed at Boston, Massachusetts. Daniel Lundy (Claude's father) was born January 13, 1841, at Lafayette, IL. His mother, Sara Ann (Jackson) Lundy, was born December 26, 1844, at Bucyrus, OH. She taught school for eleven years. Sara married Daniel, a widower with two daughters (Ada Houser and Minnie Rhodes), on May 1, 1873. They had two children: Gertrude, born August 22, 1877, and Claude H. born April 12, 1882. Both were born in Hardin County, IA.
In 1892, when Claude was ten years old, the Daniel Lundy family traveled in a covered wagon from Hardin County, IA, to Natoma, KS, to visit Frank Lundy (Daniel's brother), then on to Denver and Boulder, CO. Later, they arrived in Sheridan County to visit the Ben Smelser family and the Elwood Knight family (both ladies were sisters of Sara Lundy).
Daniel purchased the Reuben Jackson and Andrew (Ancy) Jackson (Sara's brothers) homesteads in Beaver Valley. The original Ancy Jackson homestead house was located southwest of the house Daniel Lundy built. The log house was later used as a cow shed and today (1984) a REA pole is marking the site.
Gertrude joined the family in Beaver Valley, traveling to Sheridan County on the train. She married Dan Roby on November 30, 1896, in the Quaker Church. They ran a hotel in Pine Ridge, SD. Later, they moved to Denver, CO. Their daughter, Wauneta (Moses) was born August 12, 1901.
During the dry years when grasshoppers were very bad, many people in Beaver Valley sold their land to Daniel and Sara Lundy.
Upon retirement, Daniel and Sara moved to Central City, NE. Daniel passed way November 20, 1914, and is buried at Hardin County, IA. Sara lived with her son, Claude, until her death at Hay Springs, NE on November 20, 1939. She is buried at Hardin County, IA.
