JULE HIGGINS DEAD
LIVED IN IDA COUNTY FOR 32 YEARS

Died on the fourth after a weeks illness

was a veteran of the war

Julius C. Higgins, one of the oldest settlers in Ida County, died at the family home in this city on the afternoon of the Fourth. Last week when the heavy rain of Wednesday brought a flood down the Odebolt Mr. Higgins, while discharging his duties as street commissioner, stood in the water up to his hips for three hours to rope and drag logs out of the torrent that threatened the bridge. During all his sickness he imagined he was standing in the creek dragging out those logs and he was all the time fighting the flood. "Jule" as he was familiarly known to almost everyone in the county, was for 20 consecutive years city marshal on Ida Grove, and during the administration on Mayor Lipton he has been street commissioner. He came to Ida County 32 years ago and has been a faithful servant of the city for almost a quarter of a century. He came to Iowa when 5 years old <unreadable> born in Missouri on October 23, 1840, he married Nancy J. Conner in Scott county, Iowa in May 1861. After a quarter of a century of married life his first wife died in 1897. In 1898 he married Bessie Long, and she, with four children, survive him. His children are: Mrs. John Belts, Mrs. Fred Flater, Mrs. O.E. Cole and John Higgins, all children of his first wife.
