* The Surnames of Caproni, Notini &Toschi Barga, Italy*

Updated March 12, 2011

I am researching the surnames of Michelini, Groppi, Stefani, Caproni, Notini, and TOSCHI of the Loppia, Barga, Lucca, Tuscany area of Italy. My grandfather was Leo Toschi son of Guissepi Toschi and Maria Ester Notini. He was born Barga,Italy possibly in Bagni di Lucca and was baptized in Loppia November 28, 1878. He came to the United States in the early 1900's and settled in Boston, MA where he worked as a "caster" for Caproni Galleries in Boston for 55 years. His castings include: The Appeal of the Great Spirit by Cyrus Dallin which stands in front of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA, Paul Revere also by Dallin in the North End at The Old North Church, The Fisherman at Gloucester by Leonard Craske in Gloucester, MA, The Lincoln Monuement by Daniel French in Washington, DC, The Pioneer Woman by Percy Baker and the Boy and the Bird by Bashka Paeff in the Boston Public Garden. He cast many other pieces for sculptors including Phillip Sears, Nana Bryant, Bella Pratt, Henry Kitson, Amelia Peabody and Katherine Lane.
