A note found that was written by Margaret Omans:
                  S. A. McGee
                  (1847-
In ?, ?, he enlisted in the ? Michigan Cavalry and served during the Civil War. He saved all his money during the war and being a minor sent it home for his stepfather to buy him a farm. The stepfather never bought the farm.
After his return S. A McGee became a farmer and a Free Methodist preacher. He had 2 farms near Vermontville, Michigan and was living there at the time of the birth of his grandson, Glenn A. Omans. His final home was in Spring Arbor, Michigan, the center of Free Methodism. In his picture he wears no tie because in his opinion a tie was "sinful self-ornamentation".

Potential families for Selah Augustus as a child
(Searching New York and Vermont primarily as that is what later census indicated)
I believe his mother's name to be Almira, and probably stepdad's surname was Pratt. This is based on Grandma Omans telling me that Selah sent all his Civil War money home to his stepfather to buy Selah a farm. Also, we only have photos of Almira, which leads me to believe that Selah's father died earlier.

The Civil War ended, and he would be married to Mary Ann by this time
In a message dated 11/26/2003 1:22:58 PM Eastern Standard Time, kainoa-n@comcast.net (Vicki Nellenbach) writes:
my Grandmother long ago had told my dad that his grandfather had married his wife- from Tennessee. BUT truth be known the girl he married was born and lived right about next door to them in the county of Pere Marquette! (Why would she say Tennessee?) So when I read about your McGee mustering out in that state, it rang a bell.
