-William Hatch was a merchant of Sandwich, England. He embarke d with his wife, Jane, five children and six servants in the good ship He rcules, 200 tons burthen of that place, John Witherby, Master, wherein the y were transplanted to New England in America in the year 1634. He se ttled in Scituate at a place called Greenfield (Greenbush). He was th e first visiting Elder of the Second Church there. Elder William Hatch 's widow, Jane Hatch, was married 5 months after his death to Thomas Kin g of Scituate, March 31st 1652.

William came with his wife Jane & 5 Children & 6 servants, in 1635 in "Hercules" from Sandwich, Kent. He was first fruling elder of the Second Church founded in 1644 for William Witherell, after long agitations followning the removal of Lathrop to Barnstable. "Gen. Dic. First Settlers of New Eng." by
James Savage 1860. "Elder William Hatch settled in Kent street in 1634. His house lot was the
first south of Greenfield lane. He was the first ruling elder of the Second Church in 1643. He was an active and useful man in the settlement of the town.

HATCH: ONE OF THE EARLIEST SETTLERS OF SCITUATE, MASS, WAS A NATIVE OF SANDWICH COUNTY OF KENT, ENG. FROM WHICH PLACE HE EMIGRATED TO NEW ENGLAND, BEFORE 1633, IN WHICH YEAR HE WAS MADE FREEMAN OF THE INCORPORATION OF PLYMOUTH. IN THE COURSE OF A YEAR OR TWO, HAVING ESTABLISHED HIMSELF AS AN INHABITANT AND FOUNDER A COMFORTABLE HOME, HE WENT BACK TO ENGLAND FOR HIS FAMILY, AND RETURNED MARCH 17, 1634/5 IN THE SHIP HERCULES, WITH HIS WIFE , FIVE CHILDREN AND SIX SERVANTS HIS HOUSE WAS IN KENT STREET, AND BUILT AS EARLY AS 1634; HIS HOUSE LOT WAS THE FIRST SOUTH OF GREENFIELD LANE, SO CALLED, AND UNDOUBTEDLY THE NAME OF THE STREET WAS CALLED AFTER THE COUNTY FROM WHICH HE CAME. HE WAS A MERCHANT, A MAN OF MEANS, AND QUICK PERCEPTIONS, OSSECESSED OF MORE THAN ORDINARY BUSINESS QUALIFICATIONS, AND VERY SOON BECAME IDENTIFIED WITH THE MORE PROMINENT BUSINESS AFFAIRS OF THE TOWN AND COUNTY. HE SERVED ON THE JURY AT PLYMOUTH, 1636/7; AND SEPT 1638, WAS ON THE JURY FOR THE TRAIL OF ARTHUR PEACH, THOMAS JACKSON, AND RICHARD STINNINGS FOR THE MURDER OF AN INDIAN. 7 JUNE 1637 THERE WAS GRANTED TO HIM "AN ISLAND CALLED THE OLD ISLAND, ALIA HATCHES ISLAND, LYING ON THE SOUTH-WEST SIDE OF THE NORTH RIVER, CONTAINING ABOUT 20 ACRES." THIS PROPERTY WAS AFTERWARDS SOLD TO JOSEPH TILDEN, IN 1649;5 MAR 1638/9, HE WAS APPOINTED SURVEYOR OF HIGHWAYS. 27 SEPT 1642, WAS ONE OF A COMMITTEE FOR SCITUATE, TO PROVIDE FORCES FOR THE WAR AGAINST THE INDIANS. 16 OCT 1643, HE WAS ELECTED BY HIS TOWNSMEN TO BE THEIR LIEUTENANT, "FOR TRAYNING THEIR MEN" IN THE ART OF WAR. HE ALSO HAD AN EARLIER APPOINTMENT IN 1638, WITH WILLIAM VASSALL, FOR THE SAME PURPOSE. 5 MARCH 1643/4, HE BROUGHT A SUIT AGAINST HIS SERVANT,HERCULES, (PROBABLY COLORED) AS TO WHETHER HE SHOUD SERVE HIM SIX OR SEVEN YEARS. THE COURT DECIDED SIX YEARS AS EXTENT OF SERVICE, AND THEN TO BE FREE JULY 3RD NEXT. IN 1651, HE SOLD LANDS TO SERG'T HUMPHREY JOHNSON. MR. HATCH WAS A MEMBER OF THE FIRST CHURCH TILL ITS DIVISION, ONE PART UNDER REV. MR. LOTHROP, REMOVING TO BARNSTABLE, AND THE OTHER REMAINING IN SCITUATE, UNDER THE PASTORATE OF MR. CHAUNCEY, WHOSE SETTLEMENT TOOK PLACE IN 1641. IN 1643, MR. HATCH WAS CHOSEN RULING ELDER OF THE SECOND CHURCH, WHICH OFFICE HE RETAINED TILL HIS DECEASE.
