HIST: Johnson (Clapp 15): "CLAPP (Saxon name traced back to one for whom the
parish Clapham (Home of Clapp) in Surrey, Eng., was named in the days of
Edward the Confessor. Six of the name came to America in 17th century,
five of whom landed at Dorchester, MA from 1630-40, and the other at a
later date, on the Southern coast. The Dorchester emigrants all descended
from Richard Clapp of Dorchester, Eng, and from his brother (name unknown)
who res. at Salcombe, on western coast of England, twelve miles from
Exeter."
HIST: `New England Families' by Wm R Cutter (iii, 1805-6): "The surname CLAPP or
CLAP had its origin in the proper or personal name of Osgod CLAPA, a
Danish noble in the court of King Canute (1017-1036). The site of his
country place was known as Clapham, co. Surrey. The ancient seat of the
family in ENG is at Salcombe in Devonshire, where estates were owned for
many centuries by this family. Coat-of-arms for this branch: First and
fourth three battle-axes; second sable a griffin passant argent ; third
sable an eagle with two heads displayed with a border engraile d argent. A
coat-of-arms in common use by the CLAPP family in ENG and America is:
Vaire gules and argent a quarter azure charged with the sun or . Crest:
A pike naiant proper. Motto: Fais ce que dois advienne que pour ra."
