Notes for James Crain:
The book "Early East Tennessee Tax Payers" list both James Crain and Burrell Hudson in Capt. Halies Company in Anderson County, TN in 1802. James would have been about 21 years old. Anderson was part of Knox County and was created in 1801. Burrell Hudson is still on the tax list in 1805 but James is not.

On 14 May 1818 at Kaskaskia he filed a homestead for 160 acres the N E corner of
section 13 in township 6S4W.This would be 1 mile east and 1 mile north of
Denmark (Conant Rd and Hwy 4).Benjamin homesteaded land in 1818 in sections
25 and 26 in township 6S3W.This would be a couple of miles south on hwy 13

From a letter written by Zardia Crain 5 Jan., 1950:
"My record of the Crain family shows that four brothers came from Georgia around the turn of the 18th Cent. about the year 1798-1799.(I recall my father saying that one of his great uncles was born here in Ill.in 1799."
"Three of these early Crains (birds) namely Square, Joel & Thomas settled in the Mississippi River Bottoms south of Chester and the fourth one named James settled on the old Palistine Road on a hill on the East side of Gravel Creek.There used to be a covered wagon bridge over this creek near the old homestead."
The sons of James Crain above refered to were:Benjamin, Joel, Friend (my grand father), West and Harrison.

" James Crain--came from Georgia between 1800 and 1809 and settled on the Palistine road where same crosses Gravel Creek 5 miles east of Chester--brother to Joel, Square and Thomas."
"Burried in family grave yard about 1 1/4 miles N.E. of Denmark, Ill. on the last homestead.--Zardia Crain's journal.

Notes from Deb Seibert's records:James and some of his brothers moved from Tenn. to the area near Chester, IL. in 1799.James settled near Denmark, IL in 1818.There is a Crain Cemetery south of Chester, IL also a Crain Island a few miles from there in MO.

On the plat map in section 3, and slightly into section 4. An oblong box tilted at an angle, to the left it says S 538. This was James land, or part of it.

Now in Jun 1827 Perry County was formed and 6 S 1-2-3-4 W were no longer in Jackson
