Memory of Gladys: This accidental death happened during prohibition - Frank White, Marshall Coombs, & JH - They were all involved in selling alchohol. They were all packing up to go to California for a time because they thought that they were going to be arrested or caught selling alchohol. That is when the accident happened.
Sometime shortly after his death, the family with Alton driving and Avon staying with his grandparents the Williams, set out to make the trip to California. (Lettie, Alton, Ruth, Phyllis, and Joseph C.) After going so far in Maine, Lettie asked herself what was she doing and then turned around and headed back to Vinalhaven. Alton was disappointed, he had already said goodbye to all his friends. Lettie decided to stay and run the store. Lettie's parents made several trips to California during the winter months it would take about a month to travel there, they would camp out on the way and live as cheaply as they could.
Memory of Bette Decillis: I use to visit my dad in Boston and he took me to the Boston Post Office and Boston Public Library and showed me where his dad and uncles had worked the granite stone for these buildings. My dad told me that his father and older brothers had left Mo. in the 1890's and traveled to Quincy, Mass. and worked the quarries there.
