Notes for Mahershallal Hashbaz Lyle: The first record I have of Maher is as a witness to a Halifax Co. deed, 8/5/1763 between John Payne and Ann, Henry, and Rowland Chiles. He lived near the border of Pittsylvania and that part of Bedford Co. which became Campbell Co., from where he sold his land on Cheese Cr. to a John Ward Sr. in 1783. A John Ward had also witnessed the 1763 deed with Maher. (info that is interesting but probably has no connection Maher, I need to check this property location in relation to the deed below: typ deed ref LUDB 2 p504-506 dat 12 Oct 1751 frm Elizabeth Lyles of Lun to Stephen Evans of Lun con £6.S8 re 8a Lunenburg/ N side Meherrin R, !part of 200a she obtained by a petition from Abraham Michaux end ! typ deed ref LUDB 4 p356-358 dat 7 Dec 1756 frm David Liles/Lyles & Prisellah his wife of CP Lun to Tyree Glen of same con £100 re 201a Lunenburg/ on Meherring R end ) This is all I have of Virginia references to Maher except for his claims for revolutionary service in the early 1780's.
Maher married Elizabeth Gibson whose brother, John, lived on adjoining property in Union County, South Carolina. Despite ( or maybe because of) being neighbors and in-laws, these two families evidently were not on the best of terms since Maher and Dilmus Lyle were plaintiffs in a case against Robert, William and John Gibson, defendants who were charged with breaking the peace. The matter was settled "after a promise of good behavior toward the Lyles by the Gibsons for a period of twelve months and one day."
